10 Essential Episodes Of ‘Breaking Bad’

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 November 2014 | 23.16

November 30, 2014 // 9:00am

Today marks National Meth Awareness Day in the United States, and in honor of the holiday, we couldn't help but curate a list of the very best, most definitive episodes of Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad.

With more government focus on the war on drugs than ever, Breaking Bad humanized the other side of the law in a way the media landscape had never seen. The Golden Globe and Emmy award-winning series closed up shop last fall, but it made its mark as one of the greatest television dramas of all time — sure to be studied and analyzed on a biblical level for years to come.

After five powerful seasons, creator Vince Gilligan and his incredible cast gave us some of the most intense, maddening episodes in TV history. Here are ten essential picks from the series we'll never forget.

10

"Bit By a Dead Bee": Season 2, Episode 3

Sure, this might be on the lower end of the meth action-adventure spectrum, but Walt's (Bryan Cranston) monologue in this episode is of the most poignant and definitive of the entire series. After he and Jesse (Aaron Paul) set up the perfect murder of Tuco, Walt fakes temporary insanity to his friends and family, but confides in the psychologist as to what really happened just so he can get out of the hospital and get back to work. [Where to stream "Bit By a Dead Bee"]

9

"Crawl Space": Season 4, Episode 11

Skyler's (Anna Gunn) money issues with Ted reach a standstill when she sends Saul's (Bob Odenkirk) thugs to force him to write a check to the IRS to clear Skyler's name of illicit gambling. This ends swimmingly for the IRS, but certainly not Ted, who paralyzes himself and gets Skyler in a crap load of trouble with Walt, who makes the fatal mistake of showing her his crawl space stash. Had she not lent Ted that money in the first place, who knows if Walt would have ever felt the need to keep cooking. [Where to stream "Crawl Space"]

8

"Fly": Season 3, Episode 10

Though you can't help but laugh at Walt's desperation to kill the lab's "contaminate" with his homemade swatter, the growing concern of purity of their freshest batch soon outweigh the dark humor. Ever think you'd be so worried about a batch of meth? [Where to stream "Say My Name"]

7

"Cornered": Season 4, Episode 6

The perennial episode that sets the tone for the rest of Walt's relationship with Skyler. She dares to question his knowledge and ability to keep up with the drug cartel, to which he so famously carves her out to a shell of the woman and wife she thought she was, stating, "I am the danger." [Where to stream "Cornered"]

6

"Full Measure": Season 3, Episode 13

Though Jesse's loyalty to Walt is torn throughout all of Season Three, he steps up not only as a protégé and partner but also as a pseudo son. Gale (David Costabile), however, an innocent player in the meth game, unfortunately has to suffer the consequences of a much larger operation. [Where to stream "Full Measure"]

5

"Gliding Over All": Season 5, Episode 8

If only Walt had removed that Walt Whitman book from the bathroom reading basket, Hank (Dean Norris) would have never gotten as close to the meth operation that had been happening right under his nose for years. "To W.W. from G.B." seals everyone's fate in the final episodes of the series. [Where to stream "Gliding Over All"]

4

"Phoenix": Season 2, Episode 12

After Skyler gives birth to a baby girl, the celebration is bittersweet when Walt chooses to let Jane (Krysten Ritter) overdose beside a sleeping Jesse. Walt can easily save her life, but instead see her as a cog in his and Jesse's partnership. [Where to stream "Phoenix"]

3

"Ozymandias": Season 5, Episode 14

From start to finish, this wrenching episode leaves you on edge, breathless, but most of all, pissed off and heartbroken. Jack shoots Hank to death, Walt gives up his life savings to Jack's crew, and Jesse is kidnapped as collateral. [Where to stream "Ozymandias"]

2

"Face Off": Season 4, Episode 13

This is the episode you most likely know everything about, even before you took the time to binge through the series. You probably know that just as you thought everyone would make it out of that nursing home room alive, the camera panned to Gus' face… or what was left of it. And you know that even if you saw it coming, you still sat there in shock. [Where to stream "Face Off"]

1

"Felina": Season 5, Episode 16

Unlike other major finales (ahem, The Sopranos), Vince Gilligan manages to poignantly end his series the way fans wanted to say goodbye to Walter White. His family's future is secure, just as he had wanted, but he dies with dignity in the place that gave him a second chance at life after his cancer diagnosis: the lab. [Where to stream "Felina"]

First Surf Lodge Cafe to be unveiled in Miami

The Surf Lodge in Montauk, the wildly popular summer hangout, is launching its own cafés with plans to open in 10 to 15 US cities, our Julie Earle Levine has learned.

Jayma Cardoso will unveil the first Surf Lodge Café in Miami at the NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) fair that is held simultaneously with Art Basel Miami Beach and features plenty of cool young talent. The café opens Dec. 3, and runs through Dec. 7.

Sean Olnowich, who has worked as chef at New York's Le Madri, L'Ecole (the restaurant in the French Culinary Institute), Matthew Kenney's Winebar, Todd English's Olives New York and Glass, will be executive chef at The Surf Lodge Café pop-up.

The plan is to then launch permanent Surf Lodge cafés, first in New York and then in California.

Cardoso says she's been thinking about expanding the brand, and healthy, natural "grab and go" cafés selling soups, sandwiches and fresh-pressed cold juices were a great fit. "We're not trying to do a fancy concept," she says.

The Surf Lodge will have a indoor café, food by the pool and a restaurant, hosting private dinners for celebrities, including one by Chloe Sevigny during the opening dates.

Mel B: I dated a mom I met at my daughter’s school for 4 years

Former Spice Girl Mel B dated another woman for four years after meeting the fellow mom at her child's school, she has revealed.

The 39-year-old singer and reality television star opened up about her romantic past during a candid interview with the Guardian newspaper.

Brown named the woman she was in a relationship with as Christa Parker, a mother-of-two she met at her daughter Phoenix's school in Los Angeles.

But that was all before she began a relationship with her now husband Stephen Belafonte, who she married in 2007.

"I did have a four-year relationship with a woman," Brown said. "But I've been very happily married for seven years to a penis. An amazing guy."

Yes, she refers to her significant other as "a penis" in passing.

"Well, you know what I mean. But I've definitely not been shy or been one to hold back. If I wanted to try something, I did. I had a girlfriend. So what?"

The admission comes a year after Brown was allegedly spotted sneaking into a disabled toilet for an "intimate moment" with Playboy bunny Luann Lee — a claim she rejects in the interview.

The performer once known as Scary Spice also denied she and Belafonte have an open relationship.

"No, me and my husband are very tight and solid. But I will be the first one to compliment a woman, to say to my husband, 'Oh my God, look at her legs', or, 'Doesn't she look stunning?'

"I do think women are gorgeous. Crazy but gorgeous."

As well as Brown's eldest child Phoenix from her marriage to Jimmy Gulzar, she has a daughter Angel, seven, fathered by comedic actor Eddie Murphy.

She and Belafonte also have a three-year-old daughter Madison.

Brooklyn’s ‘Rocky’ is living the dream

Nothing against the Garden, but young boxer Zachary Ochoa is living his dream of fighting on Brooklyn's biggest boxing stage.

The South Williamsburg superlightweight is Brooklyn's Rocky, running its streets and often running across the Williamsburg Bridge as part of his training regimen.

He will make his fourth appearance at Barclays Center on the undercard of Saturday's headliner — David Lemieux vs. Gabriel Rosado for NABF middleweight title. Ochoa takes on Jose Miguel Castro (4-1, 2 Kos).

"It means a lot to me,'' Ochoa told The Rumble of fighting in Brooklyn's big arena. "Ever since I was a kid in school, fifth grade, I remember people talking about the New Jersey Nets may become the Brooklyn Nets, and that was cool. It was before I started boxing. Who knew I'd be in that arena as part of their boxing start. That means so much to me that Brooklyn can claim an arena and it's not Madison Square Garden.''

Ochoa's a perfect 8-0, with four knockouts as he rises up the rankings.
"Brooklyn's got a lot of boxing fans,'' Ochoa said. "Everyone's a boxing fan in Brooklyn.''

Though he has just eight pro fights on his résumé, he has more than 90,000 followers on Instagram, mostly women. Though he takes pride in his Williamsburg roots, he makes it clear he's from the south side — not the gentrified, hipster village.

"You know how it was years ago,'' said Ochoa, who got his start at age 13 at Masons Gym in downtown Brooklyn. "I always have pride being from there because I know how it was before the changes.''

When he trains in the gym, he has video of Muhammad Ali fights on a TV to inspire him. He also uses Oscar De La Hoya as an advisor.

"He's a busy man,'' Ochoa said. "He tells me, remember, keep using the jab. It's the best punch in boxing.''

Can he be a champion like Oscar?

"He's done a great job with me,'' Ochoa said. "I'm improving every fight,
gaining more experience and technique. In two, three years, I see myself at the top — hopefully a world champion. All I have to do is stay
focused.''

Ochoa also loves basketball.

"I have to say I'm a Nets fan now,'' Ochoa said. "I loved the Knicks as a kid, but anything that has to do with Brooklyn I love.''

'Sopranos' star hits the 'Bottle'

It began as the brainstorm of an avid Yankees and New York Football Giants fan.

"One day I'm looking at my water cooler," Joe Gannascoli of "Sopranos" fame said, "and I'm saying, 'Why isn't that covered in a team logo, that'd be great, one of my teams?'"

An email to Pat Hanlon, Giants senior vice president of communications, led to a contact with NFL licensing which led to a partnership with Tom DeLuca at Fabrique Innovations … which has led to what Gannascoli hopes will be Bottle Skinz mania.

"I went from a chef to an actor, and now I'm hopefully gonna be an entrepreneur," Gannascoli said.

Bottle Skinz are described as functional, decorative bottle covers, made of polyester spandex that help prevent algae for bottles that have indirect light.

"For me, as a hard-core Giant fan, to see it actually in their weight room, is pretty, pretty cool for me," Gannascoli said.

There are Bottle Skinz for many NCAA Division I college teams and the major professional leagues, with the NFL leading the way.

"I should be in the team stores, and hopefully I will be, by this time next year, after they see how well it does," Gannascoli said.

Visit www.bottleskinz.com and nfl.com if you're looking for a last-minute stocking stuffer. All NFL teams are available on the website.

Leave Anne Hathaway Alone! Why The ‘Interstellar’ Star Deserves Your Respect

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 08 November 2014 | 23.16

A couple of years ago, Interstellar star Anne Hathaway won an Academy Award for her performance in Les Miserables. She lost weight for the role, shaved her head, sang her butt off, and even made this hard-hearted, super cynical writer cry (multiple times). However, her triumph was to be short-lived. In fact, I'm not sure she enjoyed her success at all. Because in the midst of her successful Oscar season, she had to constantly address the burning issue of "Hathahate."

"Hathahate" is a term used to describe the irrational hatred people feel when they see Anne Hathaway doing something innocuous like walking a red carpet, smiling too much, or breathing. You can tell if you or someone you love suffers from "Hathahate" if whenever they see a photo of Anne Hathaway, they roll their eyes, scoff, and say something to the effect of, "Ugh."

What's the source of all this "Hathahate?" Why did Hathaway become such a social pariah? She didn't beat up a spouse or get busted for drunk driving. She tries too hard.

Yup, that's usually why people don't like her. Anne Hathaway's big sin is that she's a trier. She sincerely puts effort into everything she does, and why shouldn't she? It's a sign of respect to her craft, her peers, and her audience. And in fact, her work ethic means that she's been able to accomplish great feats that no other actress in Hollywood has.

Anne Hathaway can pretty much do it all, and she's pretty much done it all… She successfully pulled off being a seductive Catwoman. She can out-weird Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton flick. She's held her own doing comedy opposite Steve Carrell.  She also held her own doing comedy opposite Meryl Streep. Before Amy Adams had the "real life Disney princess" thing on lockdown, Anne Hathaway starred as princess in two Disney films and sold the shit out of the bonkers Ella Enchanted. She's good with the kids! But Anne Hathaway has also gone dark, in indies like Rachel Getting Married and in the seminal Brokeback Mountain. Oh, did you forget she was in Brokeback Mountain? Yeah, Anne Hathaway, her boobs, and a bunch of wigs were in Brokeback Mountain.

Anne Hathaway has won, and been nominated for, numerous Oscars. Anne Hathaway sang at the Oscars. Anne Hathaway hosted the Oscars. Anne Hathaway has successfully acted on stage. Anne Hathaway has done Shakespeare In The Park. More than that, she is one of the few Hollywood celebs whose done Shakespeare In The Park who still (quietly) supports free theater for the people of New York City a big (monetary) way.

And yet, we often don't talk about all the good that she's done. We talk about not liking her. Why? And again, why don't "we" like her? Because she's hard-working, eager, and overly sincere.

That sentiment is not only unfair. It's sexist.

When male actors put this much effort into their work, they are lauded. Think of the praise that Christian Bale gets for gaining and losing weight, losing himself in an accent, or yelling at a crew member playing with a light. When Anne Hathaway gains and loses weight, attempts an accent, or is pleasant to everyone behind-the-scenes, she gets nothing but ire.

What grates people about Hathaway is how eager she seems, but really, without that enthusiasm to tackle any job presented to her, she wouldn't be so amazing.

An Ode To Parker Posey: ’90s Indie Queen

I can't exactly remember the first time I saw Parker Posey in a movie, but I'm pretty sure it was in Dazed and Confused, a movie I rented without my parents' permission when I was in the seventh grade. One of the many cast of then unknowns (which included a few guys such as Matthew McConaughey and Ben Affleck), Posey played Darla, the Queen Bitch of Lee High School's senior class and who, on the evening of the last day of school, decides it's her duty as a rising senior to make the lives of the rising freshman girls an absolute living hell.

As she screamed at the top of her lungs, ordering the freshman girls to practice air-raid drills on the hot Texas pavement, calling them "bitches," "sluts," and "prick-teases," all I could think was, "Oh, I like her." Sure, I was terrified of her — I knew girls just like her, and they were equally scary and mesmerizing — but there was something wonderful and enviable about how Darla took no prisoners — she knew she was hot shit and treated everyone else like the opposite. But somehow Posey made her so likable; there was something about her physicality, the way she stretched her arms wide and sauntered around while smacking her gum and yelling at her victims.

That was back in '95, and I hadn't yet heard of Parker Posey, who was, at the time, becoming the '90s indie cinema it-girl. It was around that time I had received, for my birthday, a subscription to Entertainment Weekly, and my understanding of the movies that were playing in major cities (not the small city an hour away from my rural Virginia hometown) started to grow even if I had limited access to them. It was from EW that I heard of The House of Yes, and I was immediately desperate to see it based solely on the image the magazine used of Posey in the film dressed up as Jackie O.

The House of Yes, as you can imagine, was a bit of a mind-fuck to my 15-year-old psyche when I was finally able to rent it (from the larger video store two towns over that actually kept some interesting movies in stock), as I had not quite considered a sexual relationship between siblings (one with an obsessive love for Jackie O, no less) to be a thing, much less something I wasn't even that disgusted by. Again, Posey's Jackie was a manic, suicidal woman who eventually brought great tragedy to her family. And while I wasn't turned on by her relationship with her brother (no matter how cute I thought Josh Hamilton was), there was still a part of me that rooted for Jackie. All of that has to do with Posey's delivery, her style, her whole vibe. She's able to make the worst characters seem really glamorous.

Of course, that's just one side of Parker Posey. There are the other characters who weren't so cynical and bitter. For every Miami (seen in Noah Baumbach's debut film, Kicking and Screaming), there was a Libby Mae Brown in Christopher Guest's classic Waiting for Guffman. The mockumentary about a hilariously unsophisticated midwestern theater troupe was the first of Posey's multiple collaborations with Guest and his recurring players, which have allowed her to develop her characters through improvisation. But that tidbit is not something you need to know about her, because she (and the rest of Guest's frequent stars) all pull off their comic (and musical!) performances so seamlessly.

It's also a skill she developed early on: the complete understanding of the character she inhabits. On the Criterion Collection edition of Dazed and Confused, there's an "interview" with Posey's character Darla, all of it unscripted. You can see exactly how comfortable she is not just inhabiting the personality of another person, but also developing that personality on her own.

In college, when I had better access to movies not available at the small-town video store, I also got to watch the movie that featured Posey's break-out role: Party Girl. She plays Mary, a free-spirited and fashionable nightlife personality who struggles to balance her fun after dark with the responsibilities of her day job as a library assistant. While Party Girl is notable as being the first feature film to be streamed over the Internet, it's also a fitting role for Posey who has managed to maintain a dichotomous career path herself.

While she continued to star in smaller features like Hal Hartley's bleak comic tragedy Henry Fool (and later in the sequel, the espionage-themed Fay Grim), she also took on small roles in bigger pictures, most notably You've Got Mail, playing Tom Hanks' cold-hearted and wound-up girlfriend. She'd also go on to play a role in Scream 3 and Blade: Trinity (yes, as a villainous vampire), and shed some of the harsh meanness that became associated with her characters and started to get "quirky" parts in films like Superman Returns, in which she played Lex Luther's ditzy girlfriend. She brought some comic relief, finally, to somewhat serious movies.

But the film that most resonates with me now, as an adult, is Zoe Cassavettes' Broken English. As Nora Wilder, Posey perfectly captures the indignity of looking for romantic fulfillment as a woman in her late 30s / early 40s (which, for some reason I don't think I'm even remotely ready to parse, I find incredibly relatable). Nora seems to have shown a lot of promise both in terms of her career and love life, but she finds herself stuck in an unfulfilling job as a concierge at a hotel and without a partner while her best friend seems to have managed (at least on the surface) what she dreamed of achieving. It's the sort of role you'd expect to see Catherine Keener in rather than the woman who played those memorable hard-edged women in Dazed and Confused, The House of Yes, and Kicking and Screaming.

Part of the reason why it's so affecting? Probably because I don't want to see Parker Posey end up that way: full of malaise and disappointment. Sure, I'm projecting a lot onto her real life and assuming a lot about her, but it feels that the promise she showed as the '90s indie queen didn't pan out. I want to see Parker Posey in an Oscar-winning role — or many Oscar winning roles.

But that's also part of her charm, isn't it? That she was able, in the early years of her career, to play such interesting, flawed, and different women on film. She hasn't failed by any means; rather, Posey seems like another great actress who doesn't easily fit into a box, a woman who can't easily be cast as anyone because she's believable as so many people. That's what makes her so special, and what not only makes her stand out from the other actresses of her generation but also all up-and-coming it-girls that followed her. She set the standard, and she continues to follow it by remaining somewhat elusive as a personality.

Man brutally beaten over slice of pizza

Mark Sinclair was picking up the pizza after having a drink with a friend, when he was attacked.

A man has posted pictures of his battered and bruised face following an attack by a stranger who beat him up over a slice of pizza.

Mark Sinclair, 29, said he was walking home from a pub in Stenhousemuir, Scotland, last Wednesday night after having a drink with a friend when he stopped to buy a pizza.

At around 11:10 pm he said he was attacked by a man just 100 yards from his house.

Sinclair told The Daily Record: "He said, 'Gimme a bit of your pizza', then started laying into me." He was kicked in the face and neck multiple times.

"As far as I'm aware it was only one guy but I got a bit groggy, so there could have been someone else," he said.

The attack left Sinclair with nerve damage in the back of his right eye, severe bruising and torn ligaments in his knee.

A friend suggested he post a photo of his battered face on Facebook to help track the assailant down.

He wrote on Facebook: "Share this if you can, the more people who are aware then the more likely someone will come forward."

"I thought I'd put it up to generate some interest because the police have very little to go on."

The photo has been shared more than 2200 times.

Scottish Police are looking for two unidentified men in connection with the incident.

2 Americans freed by North Korea to return to US

WASHINGTON — The two remaining Americans who had been held in North Korea have been released and are on their way home, U.S. officials said Saturday.

A spokesman for Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Clapper was accompanying Americans Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller on their journey back to the United States.

Bae and Miller were the last Americans held by North Korea following the release last month of Jeffrey Fowle, an Ohio resident detained for nearly six months.

Miller, who's from Bakersfield, California, was serving a six-year jail term on charges of espionage, after he allegedly ripped his tourist visa at Pyongyang's airport in April and demanded asylum. North Korea said Miller had wanted to experience prison life so that he could secretly investigate North Korea's human rights situation.

Bae, who's from Lynnwood, Washington, is a Korean-American missionary with health problems. He was serving a 15-year sentence for alleged anti-government activities. He was detained in 2012 while leading a tour group to a North Korea economic zone.

Fowle had been detained after leaving a Bible in a nightclub in the hope that it would reach the country's underground Christian community.

The announcement about Bae and Miller came one day before Obama travels to Asia for a three-country visit.

The development does not mean a change in U.S. posture regarding North Korea's disputed nuclear program, and the North still must show it is serious and ready to abide by commitments toward denuclearization and improved human rights, said a senior Obama administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss national security matters.

The official said there was no quid pro quo involved in the Americans' release.

The U.S. notified allies of Clapper's trip to North Korea and alerted members of the congressional leadership once his visit was underway, the official said.

The 10 Most Epic Apocalyptic Flicks Of All Time

Plenty of films fall into the "apocalyptic" realm, especially when there are so many ways the world could end! Zombies, viruses, aliens, climate change, and more zombies; despite the bleak subject matter, these movies entertained the heck out of us when it came to the inevitable apocalypse and the post-apocalyptic world we'll fight to survive in if Matthew McConaughey doesn't return from his Interstellar mission. In honor of Christopher Nolan's new spacetime epic, here are the ten best apocalyptic movies the human race would be proud to be remembered by.

10

'28 Days Later' (2002)

Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up in an abandoned hospital and wanders the desolate streets of London, bewildered as to what the heck happened while he was under. Turns out the "rage" virus has infected the population of Great Britain and the US Army has moved in to rescue the remaining few to help the country start over. All we can do is pray zombies don't move that quickly when we're the only uninfected humans left on earth. [Where to stream 28 Days Later]

9

'Dawn of the Dead' (1978)

In this George A. Romero staple, zombies rise from the dead and chase after a small group of uninfected humans hiding out in a shopping mall. You can bet they don't stay uninfected for long.  [Where to stream Dawn of the Dead]

8

'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (1956)

In this Don Siegel classic, the world ends from within! A doctor notices something is amiss among his friends and family when they becomes emotionless inhuman replicas of themselves. Alien life has invaded the planet, but not in the typical "Hey we're going to suck you up into our spaceship!" kind of way, but in the "Hey, we're going to take over being, muahaha!" kind of way. Eeep! [Where to stream Invasion of the Body Snatchers]

7

'This Is the End' (2013)

If alien monsters from the underworld are going to destroy all human life, we might as well have one last laugh. Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, James Franco, and just about every other current A-lister makes an appearance in this off-the-wall apocalyptic tale. Just one major plot hole: no way all of the Backstreet Boys would make it to heaven. A.J.'s beard was too sinful. [Where to stream This Is the End]

6

'Twelve Monkeys' (1995)

Soon to be a television series, Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys follows a felon (Bruce Willis) who's sent back in time to discover how a lethal man-made virus came to be. Also starring Madeline Stowe and a super young and wiry Brad Pitt. [Where to stream 12 Monkeys]

5

'I Am Legend' (2007)

Gasp! She listed this and not The Omega Man?! Sorry, The Omega Man is boring and Charlton Heston is already on this list twice. I Am Legend takes place in post-apocalyptic New York City after a virus, caused by cancer-curing drugs, spreads to the masses and turns them into alien-like creatures who huddle together in the dark and attack Will Smith and his poor dog. [Where to stream I Am Legend]

4

'Planet of the Apes' (1968)

Charlton Heston, cinematic savior of the human race, stars in the apocalyptic classic from director Franklin J. Schaffner. Astronauts crash on a random planet in the distant future, and it's run by a bunch of monkeys who take pleasure in locking up scantily clad humans in cages. [Where to stream Planet of the Apes]

3

'Soylent Green' (1973)

Charlton Heston stars in another post-apocalyptic tale, this one chronicling the lives of the strange, algae-eating population who feast on a mysterious substance called Soylent Green. It also offers one of the grossest twists in cinematic history. Too bad you have to wait until the very end. [Where to stream Soylent Green]

2

'The Day After Tomorrow' (2004)

I mean, if you had to be stuck in sub-zero temperatures indefinitely, who else would you want to be with than Jake Gyllenhaal? Not only will he tend to your flesh wounds when you have blood poisoning, but he'll also brace the cold and a pack of wild animals to get you medicine. [Where to stream The Day After Tomorrow]

1

'Snowpiercer' (2013)

This instant apocalyptic classic from Joon-ho Bong (The Host) is also one of the best movies of the year. After a climate-change experiment goes awry and forces the planet into an instant ice age, the remainder of the world's population boards the Snowpiercer, a massive train that continuously circles the globe. It seems like a miracle for mankind, until a vicious class system develops and the dwellers at the back of the train begin to push their way forward. [Where to stream Snowpiercer]

A pair of shady JFK air traffic controllers stole more than $165,000 in pay, overtime, sick leave and vacation compensation by submitting fake payroll information, according to Brooklyn federal prosecutors.

Between September 2011 and October 2014, Asif Ali and Jeffrey Evagues modified timesheets to indicate that they were busy directing airplane traffic when they were actually on on vacation or off duty, according to a criminal complaint.

"For three years, these air traffic controllers engaged in a high flying scheme to redirect public funds into their own bank accounts," said US Attorney Loretta Lynch. "Today they were grounded."

Using security camera footage, investigators captured the men entering a room where payroll computers were located just before the modifications were made, court papers state.

Cell phone records also showed that the men were out of the country on days that they claimed to be toiling at the Queens airport.

Asif, 38, of Queens, and Evagues, 54, of Manorville, Long Island, were both released on $50,000 bond posted by their wives Thursday afternoon.

Valerie Bertinelli is not a fan of Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera's diva behavior cost her a very famous fan.

Actress Valerie Bertinelli recalled a bizarre encounter on Wednesday's episode of "Watch What Happens Live" after a viewer asked if there was a longstanding feud between the "Hot in Cleveland" star and the singer.

"I didn't have a feud with her," the 54-year-old said. "I was a fan at that time, a long time ago, and I went up to her because she was at a Van Halen concert."

Bertinelli said she greeted the songstress, 33, with "Oh my god, I think you're a beautiful singer."

But the actress alleged that Aguilera completely brushed her off and said, "Yeah, whatever."

"She gave me the cold shoulder," she added. "And I thought, 'B—tch, I'm a fan. You can't be nice to me?'"

Since the exchange, Bertinelli has not run into Aguilera.

"She might have gotten better, but I heard she hasn't," she quipped.

Requests for comment from both Bertinelli and Aguilera's reps were not immediately returned.

School cafeteria worker stole $10k in students’ lunch money: cops

GREENWICH, Conn. — A Greenwich public school cafeteria worker has been arrested on accusations he stole thousands of dollars in lunch money from students and failed to appear in court.

James Harris faces third-degree larceny charges in connection with the alleged theft of nearly $10,000. Hearst Connecticut Media reports he turned himself in to police Wednesday on a warrant.

The 37-year-old Harris also faces charges for missing scheduled court appearances related to a 2012 driving infraction when police said he was driving with a suspended license.

Harris' bond was set at $25,750.

Police say Harris took cash over several years from students at the cash register for his own use, sometimes dollars and cents at a time.

It was not known Friday if he's represented by a lawyer.

Meet the real-life flying nun

Sister Mary Matthew Baltus grew up flying planes. Her older brother, then a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic, had a biplane, and when she was 15, he taught her everything he knew about being in the cockpit. Sister Mary Matthew, who is now a Sister of Mercy, took flying lessons on her own — rare for a girl back in the 1940s — but she never had enough money to get her pilot's license.

"I would fly any opportunity I got," she recalled. While attending Cornell University, she took flying lessons at the Ithaca, N.Y., airport until it was closed to the public in order to train U.S. Navy ensigns. Then she and a friend rode their bikes 26 miles on hilly roads to the Cortland, N.Y., airport to take half-hour flying lessons before biking the same distance back to the university.

This fall, at age 91, she finally strapped on a headset and made it back into the cockpit after 70 years.

An anonymous donor at a recent gala for Mercyhurst Preparatory School in Erie, Pa., bought the biplane ride for her.

When Sister Mary Matthew first saw that the plane ride was up for auction, she excitedly began to bid on it.

"I stopped at $150 because I couldn't afford any more," she said. "When I left the party, I knew other people would bid way higher."

But one of the Mercyhurst board members heard about Sister Mary Matthew's love of planes, and for an anonymous donation of $700, he purchased the flight for her.

Sister Mary Matthew was cool and collected as she climbed on board the shiny red, white, and blue plane last month.

"The last time I flew in one of those it was 1945," she said.

She and co-pilot Scott Allen flew up and over the Erie peninsula, to Sister Mary Matthew's great delight.

"It was so wonderful. We flew over Mercyhurst University, and the first motherhouse where I lived, and then the house where I grew up," she said with awe.

Would she do it again?
"Absolutely," she said. "If I got to be the one at the controls."

Meet the sports reporter who was banned for being too hot

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 06 November 2014 | 23.16

This gorgeous brunette nearly lost her job reporting on a football team because the players found her looks too much of a distraction.

Katarina Sreckovic's attempts to ask clever questions fell flat with the stars of Red Star Belgrade in Serbia who were apparently too flustered and nervous to concentrate.

Modal Trigger
Katarina Sreckovic is so hot that the team she covers, Red Star Belgrade, asked her multiple times to not attend games because her presence on the sideline was distracting the players.

‘Real Housewives’ creators accuse Bravo, former partner of stealing profits

The real drama about "The Real Housewives" television series is behind in the scenes in a new $5 million lawsuit by the show's creators who claim their ex-business partner conspired with Bravo to cheat them out of profits.

New York-based TV veterans Patrick Moses and Kevin Kaufman are suing Scott Dunlop and Bravo in a "case of textbook fraud and self-dealing," the Manhattan civil suit says.

In the early 2000s Kaufman visited Dunlop, a longtime friend, at his wealthy gated community of Coto de Caza in Orange County, Calif.

"Dunlop believed that the neighborhood could offer an entertainment opportunity," but he was thinking of staging a "satirical community-theater type program" not a reality television series, the suit says.

That's when Kaufman, who'd previously worked with Bravo, came up with the idea of turning the enclave into the subject for the growing genre.

Kaufman brought another TV producer, Moses, on board and the three came up with the working title, "Behind the Gates."

In 2005 the trio created a production company called Ventana and agreed to equally split the proceeds from the show because Kaufman and Moses had industry experience and Dunlop provided the local connections.

Then, a year later, after the Real Housewives of Orange County hit screens with huge success, Dunlop secretly colluded with Bravo to cut his business partners out of future spinoffs, the suit says.

Bravo reps claimed they wanted to use an Los Angeles production company to cut costs and bought the two partners out for a few thousand dollars, while claiming to retain Dunlop only as a local fixer, according to court papers.

The cable channel insisted "that there was 'no money' left in the project," the suit says, and Dunlop pushed Kaufman to sell his stake in Ventana for a mere $8,500 to avoid hefty taxes.

"Dunlop's assurances to Kaufman were even more duplicitous given their years long friendship," the suit says.

The duo recently learned through a colleague that Dunlop had retained much bigger role in Housewives, and took "for himself millions of dollars in producer fees and other compensation" that should have been split among the three original creators, the suit says.

Dunlop and Bravo "resorted to lies and deception to try to conceal what they had done and avoid the consequences of it," the suit says.

The alleged cover-up included a 2009 termination agreement between Bravo and Dunlop that shielded Bravo from future lawsuits, the suit says.

The "Real Housewives of Orange County" led to spinoffs in New York, Atlanta, New Jersey, D.C. Beverly Hills and Miami.

The network and Dunlop did not immediately return calls for comment.

Bring the tissues for this extra emotional Bengals-Browns game

CINCINNATI — Devon Still figures it will be the most emotional game he'll ever play.

For the past five months, the Bengals defensive tackle has been immersed in helping his 4-year-old daughter Leah get through surgery and chemotherapy to fight a cancerous growth found in her abdomen.

She's feeling good enough to leave a hospital back home in Philadelphia and fly to Cincinnati for a game on Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns at Paul Brown Stadium, where she'll get to watch her father play for the first time.

"It will probably be the most special game I'm ever going to play because I know my daughter is going to be here to watch me play," the third-year player from Penn State said.

"All the money that's been raised for the cancer research is because of her strength and because she's fighting this disease. So it's definitely going to be an emotional game for me."

The Bengals (5-2-1) helped Still and his daughter by excusing him from offseason activities so he could spend time with her in Philadelphia. They kept him on the practice squad to start the season even though he was hurt so that he'd keep his medical coverage.

And the team helped raise money for pediatric cancer treatment and research by donating money from the sale of his No. 75 jersey to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati. The team will present a check for more than $1 million on the field after the first quarter against the Browns (5-3).

Leah Still will be part of the presentation. She'll watch the rest of the game from one of the stadium boxes.

"It's going to be added motivation just knowing my daughter is watching me," Still said. "I want her to be able to hear how the crowd cheers that loud whenever I make a tackle, so I'm going to go out there and do whatever I can to put a smile on her face."

It's the first time Ohio's two NFL teams are playing with first place at stake so late in a season since 1986.

The Bengals (5-2-1) are alone atop the AFC North, with everyone else right behind. The Browns (5-3) could move into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh (6-3) and show they're ready to be taken seriously as a contender Thursday night at Paul Brown Stadium.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian HoyerPhoto: AP

A victory would give the Browns a three-game winning streak, their best start since 1994, and a lot of credibility as an up-and-coming team.

"It'll certainly be a good measuring stick because Cincinnati this year has been probably the best team in the AFC North," left tackle Joe Thomas said. "If we want to win the AFC North, we're going to have to beat Cincinnati, and this is our first opportunity."

What about stage fright?

"If you're at this point in your career, you've played on multiple national-stage games," quarterback Brian Hoyer said. "Guys have been in Super Bowls, playoff games. This isn't like the high school team playing on the weekly Friday night game on TV."

George Karl itching for another coaching opportunity

Some former coaches enjoy settling into the more relaxed lifestyle that comes with being an NBA broadcaster – staying close to the game with about 1/10th the amount of stress.

George Karl is not one of them.

The former Nuggets, Bucks and SuperSonics coach turned ESPN analyst is hoping for another opportunity.

"I miss the gym. I want to coach," Karl said. "It [being an analyst] is a good escape for me to stay in the game, be around the game and talk the game. Every morning I wake up and I have to study like a coach, but for a different reason."

Karl enjoyed his biggest success in Seattle, losing to the Bulls in the 1996 Finals. He led a perennial playoff team with Carmelo Antony in Denver, but never got further than the Western Conference Finals.

He was the NBA's Coach of the Year in the 2012-13, but parted ways with the Nuggets after a contract dispute.

"Right now, I'd probably prefer to wait for a team with a chance to get to the top," said Karl, 63.

"I never really turned down an NBA coaching job, and I think anyone that comes to talk to me and I have that privilege they'd be able to talk me into it probably. I don't think the worst team in the NBA is that far from the best team."

Obama reverses course, proposes getting a bourbon with McConnell

WASHINGTON – It's a summit President Obama wanted to avoid – but at least there will be cocktails.

The president revealed his aversion to Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell – the incoming Senate majority leader who has stifled his agenda — at the 2013 White House Correspondents Association dinner, when he told a searing joke with obvious conviction.

"Some folks still don't think I spend enough time with Congress. 'Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?' they ask," Obama told the assembled crowd of media and celebs at the annual black tie affair.

"Really? Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?" he said to laughs and cheers. "I'm sorry. I get frustrated sometimes."

Now, it looks like Obama and McConnell may one day some day get their boozy Happy Hour. Obama did a turnaround Wednesday when asked at a press conference about forming closer bond with McConnell after the GOP's electoral romp.

"Actually I would enjoy having some Kentucky bourbon with Mitch McConnell. I don't know what his preferred drink is," Obama said.

For the record, McConnell's favorite cocktail is a Manhattan – though he demurred when Yahoo News asked him to name his favorite label.

"The best way to drink it, in my opinion, is to make a Manhattan, which is a combination of bourbon and other unknown substances, drop a couple of cherries on top of it, make sure there's ice there, and it's a terrific drink around Christmas time, which I frequently offer to my guests," McConnell said.

Those "unknown substances" are typically vermouth and bitters.

Apple’s gold watch to sport $5K designer price tag

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 05 November 2014 | 23.16

Apple really wants its smartwatch to be on par with a luxury Swiss brand — with the price to match.

CEO Tim Cook said in September the Apple Watch would start at $349 when it goes on sale next year, but he didn't specify what a top-of-the-line gold one would cost.

No wonder. A stainless-steel version will cost $500, while the precious-metal model will set customers back as much as $5,000, iGen.fr reported on Tuesday.

The French Web site, which accurately predicted Apple would sell two iPhone 6 versions, kicked off a new round of speculation about the pricing.

Apple Watch designer Johny Ive hinted at the eye-popping price earlier this year, saying he channeled Switzerland — not Silicon Valley — when it came to the competition.

A Rolex all-gold watch can easily cost upwards of $10,000. Still, plenty of Apple watchers predicted the high-end models would run closer to $1,500.

At the September event, Cook revealed that Apple would sell three watch collections — Sport, Watch and Edition — at different price points.

Within the gold range, users can choose from either a rose gold or a yellow gold, ranging from $4,000 to $5,000, according to iGen.

The report also predicted that Apple would start selling the device in mid-February, despite reports that it wouldn't hit stores until the spring.

Angry driver bashes his brand new car after it doesn’t start

Good luck trying to resell that car!

A man in Italy hadn't even gotten the new car smell out of his Fiat 500 when he picked up an ax and demolished the car when it wouldn't start.

When Spartaco Capon turned the key to his brand new ride and nothing happened, the Italian snapped — taking his anger out on the tiny vehicle as if he was Paul Bunyan.

All the 35-year-old needed to do was to get to work on time, especially since his boss had already given him a warning about being late in the past, Central European News reports.

The sole reason he shelled out the cash to buy the vehicle was because he was sick of dealing with unreliable public transport in the northern Italian town of Lissone, which consistently had him running late to his accounting job.

When Capon realized he would be late for work, yet again, he grabbed his ax and unleashed his fury on the unreliable new whip — turning the Fiat into vehicular Swiss cheese.

"Normally in incidents like this it's not people smashing up their own car, but he was able to prove it was his," said local police spokesman, Anastasio Gallo. "We think he must have been under a lot of stress at work lately and he was taken to hospital where doctors helped to calm down and are keeping him in for tests."

Even though Capon is now being treated in a psychiatric ward at the hospital and his car has been declared totaled, he can't be labeled insane for thinking the Fiat 500 is a useless piece of junk.

Last week, Consumer Reports named Fiat the most unreliable car brand on the market, according to Fox News.

The organization's annual owner survey also found that the Fiat 500 L — a slightly larger, four-door version of the Fiat 500 — was named the least reliable car on sale today.

George R.R. Martin Shows What Westeros Actually Looks Like

Stream Game of Thrones

Powered by GoWatchIt

According to Huffington Post, enigmatic author George R.R. Martin has been pleased with HBO's imagining of his best-selling fantasy epics, but the sprawling lands of Westeros look far different than how he originally envisioned them. Now, Game of Thrones' multi-million dollar set designs and special effects are certainly nothing to sneeze at, particularly in episodes such as Season Four's "The Watchers on the Wall." When the credits start rolling after episodes of this caliber, you feel as if the lights should come up around you, the feeling is strikingly cinematic for a television show.

George R.R. Martin, however, envisions the world of Westeros on an even grander scale — can you imagine? In preparation for the release of his latest book, The World of Ice and Fire (out now!), Martin worked with various illustrators like Marc Simonetti and Ted Nasmith to accurately capture exactly how the Seven Kingdoms look in his mind's eye. Here's a peak:

Winterfell

Here, Winterfell is like the snowy equivalent to King's Landing: an Aspen vacay from the South. No squander from Ramsay Snow up in here.

Castle Black at The Wall

The village where the Night's Watch resides is far more quaint than where they're shacking up on the show. The Wall, however, is just as epic.

The Red Keep at King's Landing

Okay, Martin might just be nitpicking this one because they look pretty darn similar.

The Iron Throne

There's no way Joffrey would have been caught dead climbing that thing without being carried.

What do you think? Is Martin being a perfectionist about his own work? Sound off in the comments! To see the rest, check them out over at Huffington Post.

LeBron, Kobe look uncomfortable dealing with new realities

LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, welcome to your (new) lives.

James is quickly showing games with his reupholstered Cavaliers are not won in headphone commercial montages or Nike-filmed populist daydreams but on hostile road courts such as Portland's Moda Center, where the Trail Blazers pulled away Tuesday night for an easy 101-82 victory.

James scored just 11 points on timid 4-of-12 shooting as the Cavaliers fell to 1-2. He scored two points in the final three quarters and none in the second half. Then he came away preaching patience for his union with Kyrie Irving (3-of-17 shooting), Kevin Love and coach David Blatt to click.

"We have to understand what it takes to win. It's going to be a long process," James said.

"It's like building a car from scratch. I've done that before. I hated the process, it got on my nerves. I sent it back to get repainted 100 times. But once it was completely finished I was excited about it."

There are 79 games remaining, which is a heck of a lot, but something less than 100.

Bryant averaged 21 shots during the Lakers' 0-4 start. Enough of that. The 36-year-old superstar heaved up 37 attempts on Tuesday night, leaving 41 combined for a motley crew of teammates fronted by Carlos Boozer, Jeremy Lin and … (combing through box score) … Wesley Johnson.

Kobe Bryant pleads for help.Photo: AP

Bryant scored 39 points and praised himself afterward for being "aggressive." It didn't matter — the Lakers were edged by the Suns, 112-106, to remain winless going into Sunday's try at home against the Hornets.

An agitated Bryant said he couldn't gauge the mood in the locker room of the franchise-in-flux.

"When I came in here, I kind of blacked the hell out," he said, according to ESPN LA. "I don't know how everybody else was feeling."

But he has enough awareness to urge teammates — especially a certain one-time Knicks phenom — to get on his level.

"I think the most important thing is to understand the relentlessness that you have to play with," Bryant said. "I'll go out there and I'll leave it on the floor, everything, and compete and be relentless and not be fearful of criticism or fearful of not playing well and missing shots.

"And that's the same way I want the guys to play — Jeremy [Lin] in particular. Because he's a really good player, man. And he's just getting used to playing with that [expletive] attitude."

A-Rod admitted extensive steroid use to DEA

Call it an A-Nod.

Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez confirmed in government testimony he took Biogenesis-supplied performance-enhancing drugs over a period from 2010 to 2012, according to a report in the Miami Herald.

Rodriguez's account, given to DEA agents in January, validate many of the details presented by Biogenesis dealer Anthony Bosch in the course of litigation and MLB hearings that eventually resulted in a season-long ban for Rodriguez, which ended after the World Series last week.

In public, throughout his protracted legal battles and lengthy ban, Rodriguez has denied using the drugs.

But Rodriguez testified last winter he used human growth hormone and testosterone, according to the report. The relationship with Bosch was brokered and maintained by the infamous "Cousin" Yuri Sucart, who is now — along with Bosch — the subject of federal prosecution on drug charges. After Rodriguez's falling-out with Sucart in early 2012, he continued to get PEDs from Bosch, who also drew blood from Rodriguez — once in the bathroom of a Miami nightclub — to monitor hormone levels.

Rodriguez has returned to the Yankees roster, though his ability to play at age 39 following the layoff is the biggest question facing the team as it retools for next spring. Not to mention his reputation in the sport as a now twice-admitted doper.

Drew Bledsoe: Mark Sanchez was like Jets’ sacrificial ‘virgin’

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 04 November 2014 | 23.16

Drew Bledsoe may have once lost his starting job with the Patriots to Tom Brady, but the former No. 1 overall pick is just glad he never played for the Jets.

In an interview Monday on ESPN Radio, Bledsoe described sympathy for the shabby treatment Mark Sanchez received while playing for the Jets, following the new Eagles quarterback leading his team to victory with 202 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday.

"Going to play quarterback for the Jets … it's kind of like, you know when they used to take the pretty young virgin up to the edge of the volcano and then just throw them in?" Bledsoe said. "That's kind of what it is when you play quarterback for the Jets. It just feels bad.

"Mark had to live with that for a long time. And people threw him under the bus like he was the whole reason for the demise of the Jets. … To see him be able to come on to the field in a good system, with good talent and perform well, I'm just really happy for him."

What the Jets would do for him now.

New TV commercials shill for the latest crop of Broadway shows

Broadway has a spotty history when it comes to TV commercials — remember the howler for "The Bridges of Madison County"?

It doesn't help that live theater can look awkward on the small screen, especially in M&M-size excerpts — but it's hard to get the word out without advertising. With that in mind, which of the following make you want to shell out over a hundred bucks for a ticket?

'On the Town'

Ads for the revival of this 1944 classic about sailors on 24-hour in New York leave use an old-school announcer and location shots — a fun way to nail both the time period and the story.

What it doesn't show you is any of the show's brilliant dancing, a key part of a musical still best known for the Gene Kelly movie adaptation.

'The Last Ship'

Sting's first musical was inspired by his childhood in an English shipyard town. Maybe to look burly and less "theatery," the ad was shot on location. It does suggest the show's heart, but little of its atmosphere — the set is actually beautifully evocative, and the rising of the title's ship pretty neat.

'Side Show'

Quick: Can you tell from this ad what makes the two sisters in "Side Show" different? Not even with them singing "I will never leave you"? Unless you know this cult musical is about conjoined twins, this tantalizing ad for its revival leaves things vague.

The challenge: Will viewers want to find out more?

'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time'

The ad for this London import doesn't even allude to what it's about. Instead it's all about the production itself — and for good reason, since this is a beautifully staged play, with the kind of visual razzmatazz usually associated with musicals. Well done, Brits.

'Disgraced'

The ad for Ayad Akhtar's didactic, issue-heavy play almost looks like the trailer for a David Fincher movie. It's not.

'This Is Our Youth'

OMG those kids (Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Tavi Gevinson) are adorable! So too are the music and the videos inserted in punk-like posters.

What the ad doesn't do is reflect the bittersweet tone of Kenneth Lonergan's play, though it just might succeed in drawing younger audiences. Admittedly, on Broadway this means anybody under 45.

Pirate Bay co-founder arrested on Thai-Laos border

BANGKOK (AP) — One of the founders of popular file-sharing website The Pirate Bay has been arrested under an Interpol warrant as he was crossing into Thailand from Laos, police said Tuesday.

Hans Fredrik Lennart Neij, who uses the alias TiAMO, was detained Monday by Thai immigration police at a checkpoint in Thailand's Nong Khai province, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) northeast of Bangkok.

Neij, along with other Pirate Bay co-founders, was convicted of aiding copyright infringement by a court in Sweden in 2009. He fled the country after being released on bail.

Regional Immigration Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Chartchai Eimsaeng said a U.S.-based movie association had hired a Thai lawyer to search for Neij, and his photo had been given to immigration police in Nong Khai.

The U.S. movie and music industries have for years pursued strong legal action against sites such as The Pirate Bay, which they say aid the illegal distribution of copyrighted material, depriving its makers of profits due them.

"It might have been a coincidence, but he was wearing the same gray T-shirt that was in the photo. The immigration police officer who spotted him in the car recognized him, so he pulled his car over," Chartchai told The Associated Press by phone.

Chartchai said the 36-year-old Swede had lived in Laos since 2012 and traveled nearly 30 times to Thailand, where he has a house on the resort island of Phuket and 5 million baht ($153,000) in a savings account. Neij's wife was in the car with him. He was being sent to Bangkok later Tuesday and was expected to be returned to Sweden, the police officer said.

Jonas Nilsson, Neij's lawyer in Sweden, said his client had called him Monday and told him Thai authorities had said "he would be transported to Sweden." However, Nilsson said no decision had been made about a possible extradition.

Neij is the second Pirate Bay founder to be arrested in Southeast Asia after a Swedish court in 2009 gave him and three Pirate Bay associates one-year sentences for copyright violation. They also were ordered to pay 46 million kronor ($6.5 million) in damages to the entertainment industry. Their appeals were denied by Sweden's high court.

Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, who used the alias "Anakata" on the Internet, was arrested in Cambodia in 2012 and sent back to Sweden after an international arrest warrant was issued against him.

Svartholm Warg served his sentence for copyright infringement before he was extradited to neighboring Denmark, where he faced prosecution for hacking. On Friday, a Danish court sentenced him to 3½ years in prison after he was found guilty of hacking into a private company handling sensitive information for Danish authorities.

Five free agents the Mets could pursue

Modal Trigger

Five free agents to keep an eye on for the Mets:

Alex Rios: After a sluggish year for the Rangers (who declined his $13.5 million option), he hired Scott Boras as his new agent. The Mets could take a gamble on him.

Asdrubal Cabrera: He played second base down the stretch for the Nationals, but has plenty of shortstop experience and would give the Mets a veteran presence to supplement Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada.

Colby Rasmus: He hit 18 home runs in 346 at-bats for the Blue Jays, but would have to shift from center to a corner-outfield position. In 2013 he had a .840 OPS, but he's a lefty hitter, and the Mets would prefer a right-handed bat.

Michael Morse: The Mets took a pass on him last winter — his low on-base percentage was a concern — but could reconsider after watching him emerge as a key contributor in the Giants' world championship run.

Jed Lowrie: The veteran shortstop had a big drop in production this season for Oakland, but would likely be a safer bet than Tejada or Flores.

Branson speaks out: I didn’t ignore Virgin Galactic safety warnings

Written By Unknown on Senin, 03 November 2014 | 23.16

Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson rejected on Monday media suggestions that he had ignored safety warnings about his Virgin Galactic spaceship before it crashed during a test flight.

One pilot died and the other was badly injured last Friday when SpaceShipTwo crashed in California's Mojave Desert. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Branson dismissed British news reports suggesting that one of the project's engineers had said last week the rocket was not safe and that he had been overruled because Virgin Galactic, the entrepreneur's fledgling space tourism company, was working to a tight deadline to get passenger flights up and running.

"When you have any incidents you get a lot of self-proclaimed experts coming out, a lot of whom know nothing about what they talk about," Branson told BBC TV.

"If any of our rocket engineers warned something wasn't safe to go we wouldn't go. I've spent 30 years running three airlines without incident," said Branson, whose London-based Virgin Group name ranges from airlines to gyms and mobile phones.

"We take safety very, very carefully. Nobody said anything to worry any of the team about going."

The NTSB said on Sunday that a function to allow the craft to re-enter the atmosphere safely had deployed early and investigators had recovered its propellant tanks and engine, indicating there was no explosion.

"What they said very clearly last night was that, despite what you would read in the British press over the weekend, there was no explosion, the fuel tanks and engine are all completely intact and it was something else that actually caused the accident," Branson said.

"There have been less than a handful of British papers, and it is strange that it should be British papers, who have gone out and made wild accusations that have now been proved absolutely false. It was all garbage."

He said he did not want to speculate on what had caused the crash until the NTSB issued a final statement.

Confidence Undimmed

Christopher Hart, acting chairman of the NTSB, said on Sunday investigators had determined that SpaceShipTwo's rotating tail boom, a key safety feature for re-entering the atmosphere, had rotated early, but it was too soon to say whether this had caused the crash.

He also said they could not rule out the possibility of pilot error.

Branson and his son plan to fly on the first commercial flight. It had been scheduled for the end of February or early March next year but flights have now been put on hold indefinitely pending a full investigation into the crash.

About 800 people have already paid or put down deposits for the ride, which costs $250,000, and Branson said he had received "beautiful" letters of support after the crash from some of those who had signed up to the project.

"I'm absolutely confident that Virgin Galactic will go up and will do something extremely important for Great Britain," he said.

"Yes, we've had a massive setback but I saw all 400 engineers yesterday. They are all willing to work enormously hard to get us back on track and to create something that can be transformative in the world."

New owners add more seafood to Red Lobster menu

The pork chops are being deep-sixed at Red Lobster.

The struggling chain on Monday plans to announce another revamped menu that removes dishes including Spicy Tortilla Soup and a Wood-Grilled Pork Chop, while tacking on more dishes featuring, well, lobster.

The move to increase seafood to 85 percent of the menu from 75 percent is the first major move by San Francisco's private-equity firm Golden Gate Capital, which bought the 706-location eatery from Darden Restaurants in August for $2.1 billion.

Golden Gate hopes the moves reverses a downward trend at Red Lobster.

In the nine months ended Feb. 23 — the latest figures available — same store sales at Red Lobster fell 6.2 percent from the previous year. so, apparently, Golden Gate has opted to go back to the 46-year old chain's roots.

"At the end of the day, we believe that seafood is really why people come to Red Lobster," Salli Setta, Red Lobster's president, told AP in a phone interview.

Red Lobster says the menu will be easier to navigate and features more photos of the food. Four of the five new dishes include lobster, and it's increasing the amount of shrimp in the popular "Ultimate Feast" platter by 50 percent. The price of the dish, which also includes lobster and crab, will go up by a dollar to $26.99.

Whether its new menu will win back customers remains to be seen, with people increasingly heading to chains like Chipotle where they feel they can get high-quality food without paying as much.

Other changes had already been in the works.

CEO Kim Lopdrup, who is back at Red Lobster after serving as its president from 2004 to 2011, has said steep discounting like "30 shrimp for $11.99" was a mistake. The chain this summer also started changing the way it plates its dishes, with fish piled over rice instead of having foods spread out on a dish. Red Lobster says that presentation is more visually appealing, while also helping retain the food's heat.

Chinese bureaucrats busted for buying corpses

Two ghoulish bureaucrats in China were busted for purchasing corpses, so they could make quotas that fulfill the government's unpopular cremation laws, state media reported on Sunday.

The weird crime plan began to unravel in July when cops in the Beiliu City arrested a grave robber with the family name Zhong, news agency Xinhua reported.

He then confessed to stealing 20 corpses at night from local villages, taking them to neighboring Guangdong province and selling them to officials from Gaozhou City and Huazhou City.

Zhong implicated two officials in charge of local funeral management, named He and Dong. They copped to buying the corpses to make government-mandated quotes for cremation, Xinhua reported.

The country is aggressively pushing citizens to opt for cremation over burial, in hopes of freeing more land agriculture and other development for the living.

He and Dong were responsible for overseeing a certain number of cremations each month, based on regional population figures.

The government efforts fly in the face of Chinese tradition to honor ancestors with tombs and burial. Citizens have even resorted to secret burials to get around the government.

Dong admitted he paid $490 for each of 10 corpses, Xinhua said, while He shelled out $245 per stiff.

Conde Nast employees march into 1 World Trade Center

Employees marched into 1 World Trade Center on Monday, writing their own "part of history" and triumphantly marking the skyscraper's opening.

Workers with publishing giant Conde Nast and other tenants celebrated their roles as the first employees to occupy the space where terrorists struck 13 years ago.

"I feel like I'm a part of history," said Conde Nast employee Peter Matthew, 37, walking into his new workplace.

"You know, a lot of sad things happened here and this is a good start to get things going in the right direction. It will turn out fine. Conde Nast has a great security team."

Matthew recalled his visits to lower Manhattan as a kid, long before 9/11.

"I thought it was kind of cool. I remember as a kid growing up in New York City and visiting the World Trade Center, as it was before," he said. "And now I get a chance to work in the building."

Work crews are still putting finishes on the 1,776 foot skyscraper, with the 102nd-floor observation deck opening this spring.

John Duffy, director of policy and control at Conde Nast, admitted some of his colleagues were nervous about stepping foot into the new WTC – but most were overjoyed to be part of this downtown revival.

"It's just a great start. I think some people are nervous, but most people are just excited to start downtown. I used to work here in the '80s in the original Trade Center, so it's sort of like coming home for me," he said.

"I'm not really concerned about it (security). The port authority has this place buttoned up. (I'm) just excited. Just excited to get started. We're helping to revitalize downtown."

Vijay Ramcharitar, a 25-year-old finance analyst on the 21st floor, said he loves his office view — even if he's staring down any lingering security fears.

"The view from over there is great. I could understand the fear behind it, but fear is something they (terrorists) want you to live with," Ramcharitar said.

"If you live with fear, you can't get anything done. I don't think you look at this building with fear, you look at it with inspiration."

Maryanne Casey, a corporate paralegal at Conde Nast, said she couldn't help thinking of her family on the way into work on Monday.

Her sister worked at 7 World Trade Center and her FDNY brother spent days working "on the pile" in the aftermath of 9/11.

"I think it's spectacular," Casey said of her new work digs. "And I think it's a great tribute to America to see this. I'm proud to be able to work here."

The sparking new building is the tallest in the Western Hemisphere and cost $3.9 billion to build. It had originally been slated to open in 2006 but cost overruns and political infighting led to delays.

Other new tenants include the General Services Administration and the ad firm Kids Creative.

A yacht carrying about 100 passengers on an evening dinner cruise ran aground in New York Harbor, but there were no injuries and rescuers shuttled everyone safely back to land.

WABC-TV in New York reports that the Hornblower Cruises and Events boat ran into trouble near Governor's Island around 10 p.m. Saturday.

A number of agencies including the fire and police departments sent vessels to remove the passengers and brought them to a Manhattan pier.

It wasn't clear what caused the yacht to run aground.
