MSG reports revenue jump, thanks in part to Joel concerts

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 31 Oktober 2014 | 23.16

"The Piano Man" helped Madison Square Garden hit the right note in its latest earnings report.

MSG, which is weighing a plan to split its sports and entertainment assets, reported a better-than-expected 12 percent rise in revenue in the quarter ended Sept. 30.

Revenue reflects a 128 percent jump at the entertainment division that includes the newly refurbished arena, where Billy Joel has been playing a once-a-month concert series to sold-out audiences since January.

"Friday is a time slot that's in demand. Any act wants that time slot but having Billy Joel there makes a difference, especially in the summer," said Albert Fried & Co. analyst Richard Tullo.

Shares of the New York company, which also owns Radio City Music Hall and New York sports teams the Knicks and Rangers, rose as much as 3 percent on Friday, hitting an all-time high of $76.45.

MSG said earlier this month it's considering splitting into two publicly traded companies, with its sports teams and cable networks in one company and its entertainment business in another.

With the Knicks and Rangers in their off-seasons, higher sales from concerts and other non-sports events drove growth at the Garden.

"Our results were led by our MSG Entertainment segment, which benefited from The Garden, The Forum and The Theater at Madison Square Garden being open this quarter," MSG CEO Tad Smith said in a statement.

The Garden helped offset lower sales elsewhere as well. Revenue at MSG Media, which houses the flagship sports network, fell 14 percent.

While programming arm recorded higher fees from cable and satellite-TV operators, the hundreds of thousands of customers dropping traditional pay-TV packages had an impact on the business.

The company plans to launch an Internet-based streaming sports service, MSG Go, in December, allowing people to watch games via the Web and mobile devices.

Overall, net income rose to $108.1 million, or $1.38 per share, up from $23.9 million, or 31 cents, in the same quarter a year ago. The results included a $162.4 million gain from the sale of its Fuse network in July.

It’s no trick, Amazon starts Black Friday season now

Jeff Bezos has declared a Black Friday emergency.

The Amazon boss is moving up the usual shopping kickoff by nearly a month as rivals steal a page from the world's biggest online retailer by offering free shipping and price matching.

Amazon will start its "Black Friday" deals on Saturday, cutting into the Halloween festivities, instead of waiting until the day after Thanksgiving in keeping with tradition.

The Seattle-based company plans to offer two deals of the day from now through Dec. 22. The offers will center on big holiday items, including toys, electronics and kitchen cookware.

Walmart is weighing a plan to match Amazon's online prices this year, while Best Buy, Target and Toys R Us, among others, already match Amazon.com. Target is also offering free shipping on all items on its website through Dec. 20.

Last week, Amazon shares plunged 11 percent after it said sales during the all-important holiday quarter would be lower than Wall Street analysts expected.

Shares of Amazon were up 1.14 percent, or $3.42, at $302.49 in morning trading.

Accused cop killer charged with murder after dramatic capture

MILFORD, Pa. — Onlookers shouted "Are you sorry?" and "Why did you do it?" at the suspect in a fatal ambush on a Pennsylvania state police barracks as troopers led him from his first court appearance Friday following a grueling seven-week manhunt.

Eric Frein, 31, appeared gaunt and battered as he answered yes or no questions and listened as a judge read the criminal complaint detailing the Sept. 12 attack that killed Cpl. Bryon Dickson and critically wounded Trooper Alex Douglass.

Frein did not have a lawyer and was not asked to enter a plea to first-degree murder and other charges. Frein, who appeared to have a bloody gash on his nose and abrasions on his cheek and above his right eye, remains jailed without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 12.

Pike County District Attorney Raymond Tonkin, who said he would seek the death penalty, told reporters that Frein's capture Thursday brought a degree of comfort to the region after an "unimaginable loss of unspeakable proportions."

State police said troopers have been interviewing Frein, a survivalist found in an abandoned airplane hangar with high-powered weaponry nearby, but would not disclose details of what he told them or a possible motive.

Frein's capture ended a 48-day search through impenetrable woods and forbidding caves, schools and vacation homes. The dragnet involved hundreds of law enforcement officials fanned out across the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania and cost about $10 million, State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said.

In the end, Frein surrendered meekly around 6 p.m. Thursday to a team of U.S. marshals who stumbled across him near the hangar some 30 miles from the rural barracks where he allegedly opened fire Sept. 12, killing a trooper and seriously injuring another.

Authorities placed him in Dickson's handcuffs and put him in Dickson's squad car for the ride back to the Blooming Grove barracks.

"He has been stripped of his guns, his bombs, and now his freedom," Sam Rabadi, chief of the Philadelphia office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said at a late-night news conference.

The quiet takedown of Frein, who kneeled and put his hands up when marshals approached him, ended weeks of tension and turmoil in the area, as authorities at times closed schools, canceled outdoor events and blockaded roads to pursue him. Residents grew weary of hearing helicopters whirring overhead, while small businesses suffered mounting losses and town supervisors canceled a popular Halloween parade.

"It feels good to know there's a guy like this off the streets," said Gregory Kubasek, 19, of Marshalls Creek, who drove to the barracks Thursday night to catch a glimpse of Frein.

State police Commissioner Frank Noonan said Frein was in good health, despite what he described as a "scratch" on his nose that he said was already there when marshals arrested him.

"He looked fairly healthy, healthier than I would've expected," he said.

State police said they didn't know whether Frein, who was unarmed when captured, had been using the hangar as a shelter during his seven weeks on the run, and they wouldn't say what they found there.

"He did not just give up because he was tired," Noonan said. "He gave up because he was caught."

Dickson's family, as well as Douglass and his family, expressed "relief and gratitude" over Frein's arrest, Noonan said.

Police said they linked Frein to the ambush after a man walking his dog discovered his partly submerged SUV three days later in a swamp a few miles from the shooting scene. Inside, investigators found shell casings matching those found at the barracks as well as Frein's driver's license, camouflage face paint, two empty rifle cases and military gear.

Officials, saying Frein was armed and extremely dangerous, had urged residents to be alert and cautious. Using dogs, thermal imaging technology and other tools, law enforcement officials combed miles of forest as they hunted for Frein, whom they called an experienced survivalist at home in the woods. At times, police ordered nearby residents to stay inside or prevented them from returning home.

Trackers found items they believe Frein hid or abandoned in the woods — including soiled diapers, empty packs of Serbian cigarettes, an AK-47-style assault rifle and ammunition, and two pipe bombs that were functional and capable of causing significant damage.

They also discovered a journal, allegedly kept by Frein and found in a bag of trash at a hastily abandoned campsite that offered a chilling account of the ambush and his subsequent escape into the woods. The journal's author described Dickson as falling "still and quiet" after being shot twice.

Authorities said Frein had expressed anti-law enforcement views online and to people who knew him.

Police found a U.S. Army manual called "Sniper Training and Employment" in his bedroom at his parents' house in Candensis, and his father, a retired Army major, called his son an excellent marksman who "doesn't miss," according to a police affidavit. Authorities believe Frein had been planning a confrontation with police for years, citing information they found on a computer used by him.

A man and a woman believed to be Frein's parents, reached separately by telephone on Thursday, declined to comment.

The manhunt had disrupted some plans for trick-or-treating, but Halloween festivities in Barrett Township, in the heart of the search zone, were back on.

"We as a town think the kids have gone through enough," said Ralph Megliola, chairman of the township board of supervisors.

Helen Blackmore, who lives in nearby Cresco, was ready for some normalcy.

"It was very crazy here. The helicopters were out all the time. Nobody was sleeping. Even today they were out," she said. "We're relieved. We're very relieved. We want things to get back to normal."

Frein is charged with first-degree murder and various other offenses, including two counts of possession of weapons of mass destruction filed after police discovered the pipe bombs.

Dickson, at his funeral, was called a devoted husband and father and "impeccable" former Marine who took his work seriously but also enjoyed making wooden toys for his young sons and finding humor in everyday situations.

Douglass was shot in the pelvis and critically injured in the ambush, which took place during a late-night shift change. He remained hospitalized until Oct. 16, when he was discharged to a rehabilitation facility, state police said.

"If you attack troopers, and a civilized society, the Pennsylvania State Police will bring you to justice. Eric Frein is a coward," the Pennsylvania State Troopers Association said in a statement. "Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson II and Trooper Alex T. Douglass are true heroes."

Patrick Moryto, 21, of East Stroudsburg, rushed to the Blooming Grove barracks after he heard Frein had been caught, and got there in time to see him.

Frein was wearing camouflage pants and a dark hooded sweatshirt when he entered the barracks, Moryto said.

Hours later, the former fugitive left in an orange prison jumpsuit.

Why Taylor Swift makes sense as NYC’s ambassador

Alongside the release of her much anticipated album "1989," Taylor Swift made headlines this week after NYC & Company named her New York City's "Global Welcome Ambassador." And New Yorkers weren't happy about it.

But Swift isn't trying to claim herself as a bona fide New Yorker, and neither is NYC & Company. The summary alongside the promotional video says, "Join Taylor Swift and the 55 million other visitors." Swift is just someone who came and fell in love with the Big Apple.

Most criticized her song "Welcome to New York," as a marketing tool for the campaign that doesn't highlight anything specific about the city. A fair point, but it's also a snappy beat with a simple message: Pack your bags tourists, New York City is waiting for you!

Here's why Taylor Swift as NYC's Global Welcome Ambassador makes sense:

She's the Global Ambassador

Swift arrives at premiere in NYC in August.Photo: AP

Dr. Zizmor is not going to convince someone in New Zealand that NYC will be the trip of a lifetime. But, the pop star who's record-breaking "Red" tour which netted over $150.2 million from 86 performances in 12 countries throughout Asia, Europe and Australia, and was the first female artist to sell out Sydney's Allianz Stadium —might.

More tourists bring more money

Swift arrives at "Late Show with David Letterman," Tuesday October 28th.Photo: FilmMagic

Tourists visiting NYC because they loved "Seinfeld," or want to live inside Jay-Z's song "Empire State of Mind," will still get here. But, Swift's branding attracts a whole new set of starry-eyed kids, a kind of younger "Sex and the City" set with an idealistic image of New York City (as opposed to the struggling, twenty-something Brooklyn milieu of "Girls.")

NYC & Company reported that 54.3 million people, domestic and international, visited New York City in 2013. This resulted in an average of $1,640 tax savings for each New York City household. We should lovingly open our arms to all those Swift fans with parents that willingly shell out for pricey concert tickets. They'll probably also pay for a fancy NYC vacation to give their kid the excitement of a possible Swift sighting.

She's a marketing whiz

A lot of the hype leading up to "1989" can be attributed to Swift's social media skills. With over 12 million Instagram followers and 46 million Twitter followers, she's a whiz at engaging fans with her life. Forbes wrote, "Taylor is not only a music prodigy. She seems to be a marketing one as well." New Yorkers might have winced when she posted a photo of a latte with the caption #WelcometoNY , but if anyone can make the urine-soaked street corners appealing to tourists, it's probably Swift.

She really LOVES NEW YORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

During her appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday night, Swift slid in that she's not getting paid for this. And said of NYC & Company's decision, "I guess the city said, she's the most enthusiastic, obnoxious person to ever love New York. She loves it with like 18 exclamation points…" Most New Yorkers would probably also love the city more if they had a $20 million apartment, but tourists aren't interested in a dirty, smelly, cock-roach infested image of NYC. If she loves the city this much, let her paint it as a glittering, magical place where any tourist's dreams could come true.

She's pretty good at what she does

"1989" is predicted to sell 1 million records this week, which would award Swift the title of being the first act to earn three million-selling weeks since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. ("Speak Now" and "Red" also sold over a million copies in their first weeks.)

Swift has seven Grammys, 15 American Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards and was the first woman to be named Billboard's Woman of the Year twice. Bloomberg Businessweek wrote that "1989 will be the best-selling album of 2014, and it will redefine the metrics for a successful record in the age of Spotify and YouTube." Obviously, she would want to be in the "greatest city in the world," and hey, tourists, you should want to be here too.

Stephen Baldwin pleads guilty to driving with a suspended license

Hotheaded actor Alec Baldwin's youngest brother, Stephen, pleaded guilty to a traffic infraction Friday in Manhattan court for driving with a suspended license.

Baldwin, 47, also had to pay a $500 fine as part of the plea deal that reduced the charges from a misdemeanor to an infraction.

"I didn't know my license was suspended," he told cops who pulled him over May 2 near Broadway and 16th Street, court papers show. "I had a tax issue but I paid it last week."

Baldwin had his license suspended for $400,000 in unpaid taxes in Rockland County.

He was stopped in a 2013 gold Ford Explorer in the Sugar Hill neighborhood around 6:45 a.m., court papers state. Baldwin also had an expired Texas registration.

This isn't the first time Baldwin, best known for his role as Michael McManus in the 1995 thriller "The Usual Suspects," was busted for driving without a license.

In August of 2012 he was nailed on a similar charge.

The less famous thespian has been promoting his upcoming movie "2047: Sights of Death."

"Mr Baldwin is happy to have cleared up his license in this case and is looking forward to focusing on his work," said his attorney Richard Southard.

Breaking Down The ‘Peter Pan Live!’ Trailer

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 30 Oktober 2014 | 23.16

Until today, all we really knew about NBC's upcoming Peter Pan Live! was that Girls star Allison Williams would warble her way through "I'm Flying" while dressed up like a Greenpoint hipster and that Christopher Walken would be wearing a costume that made him look less like Captain Hook, and more like Deadwood's Al Swearagen in drag.

Now, thanks to a 30-second promo, we also know much, much more.

Forget all about that second star to the right or going straight on 'til morning. Peter Pan Live! will feature an enormous moon and a wind machine that was clearly cribbed from Beyoncé's last tour.

There will be feet. Revolutionary choice, right?

This ominous finger wiggling will haunt us forever. What is Allison Williams doing here?!?! Is this a spoiler that in this production, Peter will have his own hook?!?!? Is she mimicking the cameraman videotaping her? Because if so, she is miming taking a snapshot and not rolling video. WHY IS SHE WIGGLING HER FINGER?!?!

Move over, Jennifer Lawrence. Take a seat, Uma Thurman. You're over, Angelina Jolie! Allison Williams is about to break new ground for women in the world of fight choreography. Look how she swings that dagger like she's a showgirl with a fan! Peter Pan means serious business and it looks like Captain Hook knows it. I mean, have you ever seen Christopher Walken look so terrified?

And finally, Allison Williams will be smiling a lot and Christopher Walken will turn his torso at least once.

If you can't wait until December 4 to watch Peter Pan Live! on NBC, you can obsess over the 30-second teaser below.

‘Honey Boo Boo’ family starts to turn on one another

As lurid details continue to emerge about June "Mama June" Shannon's alleged relationship with a convicted sex offender, the Shannon/Thompson family seems to be coming apart at the seams.

The family of 9-year-old pageant star Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson saw their reality show vanish and their names splashed all over the tabloids when photos surfaced last week of the family's matriarch spending time with Mark McDaniel, a man who molested Shannon's 20-year-old daughter Anna Cardwell. He was recently released from jail after he served time for aggravated child molestation.

Now, Shannon's 14-year-old daughter is slamming Lee "Uncle Poodle" Thompson, who appeared on the series, claiming he is spreading lies about the seemingly tight-knit family, adding fuel to the fire surrounding their scandal.

On Instagram, Lauryn Shannon, aka "Pumpkin" from the now-canceled show, posted a rant against her father's brother.

She shared a photo of an account she claims belonged to Lee Thompson and his partner.

"THIS HERE IS UNCLE POODLE AND HIS MAN. THEY ARE UPSET BC THE SHOW WAS CANCELLED AND THEY NO LONGER HAVE MONEY. THEY HAVE BEEN SELLING FALSE STORIES AND MAKING MONEY. HE TOLD ME EARLIER TODAY THAT HE HOPED MY MOM GOT CANCER AND DIED OF A SLOW PAINFUL DEATH. GET THIS HE IS 30 YEARS OLD TELLING A 14 YEAR OLD THIS. EVERY STORY THAT'S [sic] OUT RIGHT NOW HE HAS PUT OUT AND ITS ALL FALSE. HE JUST THINKS IT ALL FUN AND GAMES SELLING FAMILY OUT…"

FOX411 can reveal that Lee Thompson tried to sell a story to us when we reached out to him for comment about Shannon allegedly dating McDaniel.

"For the true real story about all of this and photos how much is it worth to yall," he wrote.

FOX411 does not buy stories and did not hear from Thompson again after we made that clear to him.

Meanwhile, reports say Honey Boo Boo's dad is mulling over whether or not he should try to get custody of the child star and her two underage sisters—as one of the images that leaked of Shannon with McDaniel showed the convicted sex offender with his hand on Alana Thompson's arm.

"He is really distraught," a source told E! News of Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson. "He is torn apart by this. He is very concerned for Alana and the girls and he has no idea what the hell June is thinking right now."

In a video posted by OK! Magazine, Sugar Bear is seen telling paparazzi that he is "a little bit" upset that McDaniel was around his daughter.

Shannon posted a video on Friday vehemently denying that she has had any contact with McDaniel since his release from prison. She has since deleted that video.

Child Services told FOX411 on Monday that the department could not confirm or deny if they were investigating Shannon's family for privacy reasons, but a rep explained, in general, if child services determines children are not safe in their environment they are removed from their home.

In that case, the Division of Family and Children Services looks to nearby relatives to care for the children. A typical investigation takes 30 to 45 days.

Family law attorney Jacqueline Newman, of Berkman Bottger Newman & Rodd, predicted Shannon may end up losing custody of her three daughters, who are all under 18 years old.

"I think in situations like this, courts take them very seriously. If they find that these children are in any way in harm's way, they will take the kids away."

Mike Pettine’s dad: HS hazing cancellation was ‘overreaction’

Mike Pettine Jr., coach of the Cleveland BrownsPhoto: Getty Images

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — The championship-winning former football coach at a Philadelphia-area high school rocked by hazing allegations says canceling the rest of the season was an "overzealous, knee jerk, overreaction."

Former coach Mike Pettine Sr. said in a statement Wednesday the district unfairly punished the entire Central Bucks West student body, tarnishing the school's reputation nationwide. He's calling for the ouster of board members who agreed with the move.

The district says the team engaged in "humiliating and inappropriate" pre-season rituals for rookies, including grabbing another player's genitals while fully clothed.

The 74-year-old Pettine coached the program to four state titles and is the father of Cleveland Browns coach and former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine Jr. The elder Pettine says the district's reaction threw "an irresponsible blanket of guilt over every player and coach."

Thomas Menino, Boston’s longest-serving mayor, dies at 71

BOSTON — Thomas Menino, whose folksy manner and verbal gaffes belied his shrewd political tactics and effective use of technology to govern as Boston's longest-serving mayor and one of its most beloved, died Thursday. He was 71.

Spokeswoman Dot Joyce said in a statement that Menino died in the company of his family and friends. He was diagnosed with advanced cancer in February 2014, shortly after leaving office, and announced Oct. 23 he was suspending treatment and a book tour so he could spend more time with family and friends.

Thomas MeninoPhoto: AP

Menino was first elected in 1993 and built a formidable political machine that ended decades of Irish domination of city politics, at least temporarily. He won re-election four times. He was the city's first Italian-American mayor and served in the office for more than 20 years before a series of health problems forced him, reluctantly, to eschew a bid for a sixth term.

"I can run, I can win and I can lead, but not in the neighborhoods all the time as I like," Menino, a Democrat, told an overflow crowd at Boston's historic Faneuil Hall on March 28, 2013.

Less than three weeks after that announcement, two bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 260. Menino, who had undergone surgery on a broken leg just two days earlier, checked himself out of a hospital to help lead his shaken city through the crisis.

At an interfaith service three days after the bombings, Menino, in a symbolic act of personal defiance, painfully pulled himself to his feet from his wheelchair to declare that no act of violence could break Boston's spirit.

"Even with the smell of smoke in the air and blood in the streets and tears in our eyes, we triumphed over that hateful act," he said.

He was in an SUV in nearby Watertown at the end of a nearly daylong, violent manhunt when Police Commissioner Edward Davis informed him that the surviving bombing suspect had been captured. Menino's tweet: "We got him."

Menino was anything but a smooth public speaker and was prone to verbal gaffes. He was widely quoted describing Boston's notorious parking shortage as "an Alcatraz" around his neck, rather than an albatross.

He often mangled or mixed up the names of Boston sports heroes — once famously confusing former New England Patriots kicker and Super Bowl hero Adam Vinatieri with ex-Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek. But while such mistakes might sink other politicians in a sports-crazed city, they only seemed to reinforce his affable personality and ability to connect with the residents he served.

"I'm Tom Menino. I'm not a fancy talker, but I get things done," he said in his first TV ad.

He would grow a reputation as an urban mechanic, crisscrossing city neighborhoods and building coalitions to tackle problems as small as filling potholes or as big as rejuvenating the city's public schools in the aftermath of court-ordered desegregation decades earlier.

In an interview with The Associated Press in March, Menino said he "loved every minute" of being mayor, even during the city's darkest days. He credited his staff and others, downplaying his own role.

"I just did my job — nothing special," he said.

His tireless public schedule amazed and exhausted many of his closest aides. In his new memoir, "Mayor For A New America," he made clear that was his greatest legacy.

"I paid attention to the fundamentals of urban life — clean streets, public safety, good schools, neighborhood commerce," Menino wrote in the memoir, released in October 2014 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. "Call my City Hall and you never got an answering machine. People trusted government because it heard them. Because they could talk to it. Because it kept its word."

Menino was sometimes faulted for being too controlling or too quick to lose his temper with subordinates. But his lengthy administration would steer clear of major scandal, something that could not be said for many of his predecessors.

Thomas Michael Menino was born on Dec. 27, 1942, in the city's Hyde Park neighborhood. He received a certificate in business administration from Chamberlayne Junior College in 1963. A former insurance salesman, he caught the political bug while working as a legislative aide to state Sen. Joseph Timilty. He first earned elective office as a district city councilor in 1984.

He went back to school and earned his undergraduate degree in community planning from the University of Massachusetts-Boston in 1988.

Menino became the council's president in 1993 and was automatically elevated to mayor when then-mayor Raymond Flynn was named U.S. ambassador to the Vatican. While that prompted some to initially chide Menino as an 'accidental mayor,' he quickly proved his own political mettle, winning a four-year term later that year.

He was never seriously challenged in four subsequent re-election bids, a two-decade period in which the city he governed slowly grew younger and more diverse.

Traditional urban ethnic enclaves in Boston were beginning to give way to a mix of new immigrants and younger professionals. He developed vibrant neighborhoods through a series of initiatives: building and renovating public parks and green spaces, setting asides miles of new bicycle lanes despite the city's famously narrow, twisting streets and promoting the public's involvement in securing their communities and curbing violent crime.

Menino was also among the first big-city mayors to see the opportunities that technology afforded local governments to help solve recurring problems. He set up an office that developed a pioneering smartphone app for residents to report potholes and other apps to report graffiti and other nuisances.

He never sought nor showed interest in running for higher office. Mayor, it seemed, was the only political job to which he aspired. That would not, however, stop him from being at the forefront of major national issues.

He vigorously pushed to end gun violence as co-founder in 2006, with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, of a 700-member mayors' group that lobbies lawmakers on gun measures.

Thomas Menino with former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg during the first National Summit on Illegal Guns in 2006.Photo: AP

Menino was among the first U.S. mayors to offer domestic partnership benefits to city employees when he signed an executive order in 1998, and he vowed block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city after the company's president spoke out against gay marriage in 2012, though he eventually acknowledged he had little power to stop the chain.

Menino was not afraid to experiment and walk away from what did not work.

In 1995, his administration began videotaping the court appearances of men arrested for soliciting prostitutes, promising to show on its cable TV station the arraignments of those convicted. Menino had earlier said, "By broadcasting faces on television at least some of the prostitution activity will decrease."

The initiative was later abandoned.

Menino's health was often a concern, and he was admitted to the hospital several times while in office.

In 2003, he underwent surgery to remove a rare sarcoma on his back. The following year, his doctors confirmed he has been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease.

He spent six weeks in the hospital in 2012 for a series of ailments, including a respiratory infection. While he was in the hospital, he suffered a compression fracture in his spine and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

In May 2013, he was back in the hospital for surgery for an enlarged prostate. In typical fashion, he declared on his release several days later that he would not let the latest ailment slow him down.

"I'm raring to go," he said.

Menino focused much of his attention in his final months in office focusing on education, including an appearance before a legislative committee in which he advocated for more charter schools and flexibility to intervene in struggling urban schools.

Menino didn't take sides in the race to succeed him, eventually won in November 2013 by Martin Walsh, a state representative from the Dorchester neighborhood. He instructed his staff to work closely with Walsh on a smooth transition of power.

Walsh paid tribute to his predecessor in his inaugural address the following January, saying Menino's "legacy is already legend and his vision is all around us."

Menino left City Hall on his final day in office Jan. 6 to thunderous applause from city workers. Later, he tweeted: "Thank you Boston. It has been the honor and thrill of a lifetime to be your Mayor. Be as good to each other as you have been to me."

Menino accepted a position as co-director of Boston University's new Initiative on Cities, a program that studies issues facing the future of the world's cities.

In March 2014, Menino revealed in an interview with The Boston Globe he was battling an advanced form of cancer that had spread to his liver and lymph nodes. Doctors said they were unable to pinpoint where the cancer originated.

Menino told the newspaper he was ready to face the challenge.

"What I don't want is people feeling sorry for me. I don't want sympathy. There are people worse off than me. It's my biggest concern — I don't want to be treated any differently," he said.

In a statement announcing he was stopping treatment to devote himself to his loved ones, Menino said he was "hopeful and optimistic that one day the talented researchers, doctors and medical professionals in this city will find a cure for this awful disease."

Menino leaves behind his wife Angela, his children Susan and Thomas Jr., a Boston police officer, and six grandchildren.

Small plane crashes into building at Wichita airport

WICHITA, Kan. — A small plane has crashed at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport, sending up huge plumes of black smoke that can be seen for miles around the city.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro says a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air reported losing engine power just after takeoff Thursday morning.

Molinaro says the plane crashed into a building on airport property while attempting to return to the runway.

Fire trucks were positioned near the crash and were pouring water on the wreckage.

The FAA referred other questions to local search and rescue officials.

Officials with the airport and city did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Meet ‘Marco Polo,’ Netflix’s Answer To ‘Game Of Thrones’

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 23.16

In recent months, Netflix has adopted unique content as its own, particularly in the crime genre with hit series like Happy Valley, Peaky Blinders, The Fall, and The Killing. This time around, they're venturing into the fantasy realm with Marco Polo.

The streaming giant has just released an exclusive teaser trailer for their spanking new original series coming this December. All ten episodes will be available to binge starting December 12th, and, from the minute and a half we've seen so far, it looks pretty bad ass and nothing like that splish-splash nonsense you played in the pool as a tyke.

King's Landing looks like it has some competition. There are bow-and-arrow battles, naked people doing crazy acrobatics, vixens for days, and cobras! Not that Netflix has made any snoozer series, but subscribers have been waiting for an epic fantasy series like this for some time now. Marco Polo looks like it will surely satisfy that craving.

Michael Jordan sees Lance Stephenson as LeBron-stopper

Michael Jordan still knows what makes players tick. How else to explain the manner in which the Hornets owner lured Lance Stephenson away from the Pacers?

Yes, the three-year, $27 million deal helped, but so did Jordan playing to the ultra-confident Stephenson's ego.

"We need someone that can compete against LeBron. Simple as that," Jordan told the 24-year-old Coney Island product, according to an interview this week with ESPN. "I don't know if the antics was one of those things, but the thing is, I loved the way you competed against LeBron. And to me that's a plus 'cause if you want to get out of the East, you want to get past Cleveland — at the time it was Miami — you got to beat LeBron.

"We're willing to take a gamble with you if you are willing to take a gamble with us. Next thing you know, he's with us."

Stephenson, a fifth-year pro coming off his best season, and James have battled each other the last two years in the playoffs. This past May, in the Eastern Conference finals, Stephenson tried to get inside James' head by saying he has a weakness, was fined $15,000 for flopping on two separate occasions, snuck into the Heat huddle, committed a flagrant foul on Norris Cole and blew air into James' ear. James also led the Heat to a sweep of Jordan's Charlotte team to to open the playoffs, which was highlighted by this dunk and stare at Jordan.

"If I feel like he's going the wrong way that is when I will step in, like most parents do, and say, 'Look you need to focus on this and think about that,'" Jordan told AP.

Aereo wins backing from FCC’s Wheeler in battle for survival

Barry Diller's Aereo has won over a key backer in its bid to come back as a cable service.

A proposal circulated by Tom Wheeler, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission Chairman, would treat Aereo and other Internet-based video providers the same as traditional cable and satellite-TV companies.

If approved, the change means broadcasters couldn't outright refuse to license their local TV signals to Aereo and would have to negotiate with the upstart service.

Aereo, which used thousands of dime-sized antennas to redistribute local stations without paying for the signal, halted service after losing a Supreme Court battle to the major broadcasters in June.

After that defeat, Aereo changed tactics and sought to be defined as a cable-TV service so that it could negotiate a "compulsory license." But a federal judge nixed that effort as well, ruling it wasn't a cable service under the existing rules.

Wheeler, who outlined his proposal in a blog post on Tuesday, agrees that Aero should be on par with cable and satellite-TV services as a way to encourage competition.

He wants to change the rules to accommodate it and other "a la carte" services that allow consumers to cherry pick channels rather than having to buy a monthly programming bundle.

"Aereo recently visited the Commission to make exactly this point — that updating the definition of an MVPD will provide consumers with new choices," Wheeler wrote. "And perhaps consumers will not be forced to pay for channels they never watch."

Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia applauded Wheeler's proposal, saying the laws haven't kept pace with changing viewing habits and a new crop of online video providers.

"By clarifying these rules, the FCC is taking a real and meaningful step forward for competition in the video market," Kanojia said in a statement. "The FCC recognizes that when competition flourishes, consumers win."

Daniel Radcliffe shows off rap skills on the ‘Tonight Show’

Who knew Harry Potter was a hip-hop star?

While promoting his upcoming horror flick "Horns" on Tuesday night, Daniel Radcliffe hit the "Tonight Show," where he and host Jimmy Fallon dished about his love of music — and rap in particular. While chatting with Fallon, the self-proclaimed Eminem fan also revealed his unique obsession of memorizing the complicated lyrics to fast songs. Among the swift jams that Radcliffe has mastered? Blackalicious' "Alphabet Aerobics."

Channeling his inner Slim Shady, Radcliffe then took to the stage and put his skills to the test by reciting the lyrics to the Blackalicious tune as Fallon held up alphabet cue cards in the background. After a nearly flawless performance, Radcliffe was met with a standing ovation.

Check out Radcliffe's epic rap in the video above.

Woman in zombie costume busted for DWI twice in 3 hours

GATES, N.Y. — Police say a woman wearing a zombie costume and makeup was charged with drunken driving twice within three hours after attending a Rochester bar's "zombie prom" party.

Police in the suburban town of Gates tell the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester that 26-year-old Catherine Butler of Rochester was arrested around 2 a.m. Saturday when an officer spotted her driving without her headlights on.

She was taken to the police department, where a friend picked her up.

Officials say she later got back in her car and was stopped again around 5 a.m. driving on the same road and still in her zombie costume and makeup. Her police mug shot shows were wearing fake blood and cuts on her face.

It couldn't be determined Wednesday if she has a lawyer.

Stephen Collins, estranged wife list adjacent homes

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 28 Oktober 2014 | 23.16

A pair of adjacent homes owned by Stephen Collins and his estranged wife Faye Grant are up for sale.

The L.A. Times reports that the Brentwood homes are listed at $2.85 million and $2.7 million respectively.

The pricier home, which boasts 2,756 square-feet of living space, features a Cape Cod-like front and is situated on a lot just over a quarter-acre. Other highlights of the home include three bedrooms and three bathrooms in addition to a two-story guest house.

The second home, which is smaller in scale at 2,583 square-feet, also features three bedrooms and three bathrooms but has a swimming pool.

Interested buyers can purchase both for a total of $5.5 million.

It's not clear when the homes hit the market.

Collins became the subject of negative headlines in early October after he allegedly confessed to child molestation.

The 13 most quotable moments from ‘Young Frankenstein’

Few films are as quotable as Mel Brooks' 1974 horror parody classic, "Young Frankenstein." And with Halloween nearly upon us, the film celebrates its 40th birthday with a new Blu-ray release, in stores now.

In its honor, let's relive the very best quotes from the film that will certainly leave you in stitches — though hopefully not the kind keeping Frankenstein together.

1. "Hallo. Would you like to have a roll in the hay?" — Inga, rolling in hay

2. "It's pronounced 'Fronkensteen.' " — Dr. Frankenstein

3. "Didn't you use to have that on the other side?" — Dr. Frankenstein, referring to Igor's shifting hump

4. "Ovaltine?" — a persistent Frau Blücher

5. "Oh, sweet mystery of life, at last I've found you!" — Inga, singing as she enjoys Dr. Frankenstein

6. "Footsteps! Footsteps!" — Inspector Kemp, just trying to be understood

7."What knockers!" — Dr. Frankenstein, referring to the door
"Oh, thank you, doctor." — Inga

8. "SEDAGIVE!?" —Dr. Frankenstein, not impressed with Igor and Inga's charade guessing skills

9. "I thought I told you never to interrupt me while I'm working!" —Dr. Frankenstein, found mid-coitus

10. "You haven't even touched your food." — Inga
"There. Now I've touched it. Happy? — Dr. Frankenstein, after slapping the food

11. "What hump?" — Igor, after Dr. Frankenstein offers to help him with his hump

12. "Wait Master, it might be dangerous . . . you go, first." — Igor

13. "Where you going? Oh, you men are all alike. Seven or eight quick ones and then you're out with the boys to boast and brag." — Elizabeth, after shacking up with the monster

Unauthorized Beyoncé bio in the works

Beyoncé may share pieces of her personal life through her music and social media — but we're about to learn a lot more about the R&B star.

On Monday, Grand Central Publishing announced the release of the "first comprehensive biography" focusing on the life and times of Queen Bey. Set to hit shelves in the fall of 2015, the still untitled-read will be penned by J. Randy Taraborrelli.

"I can't think of a more intriguing subject than Beyoncé," Taraborrelli said in a statement. "From Destiny's Child to solo superstardom to her marriage to Jay Z, Beyoncé has lived a most incredible, inspiring life. I know my readers will enjoy her journey."

Although Beyoncé herself won't be participating in the unauthorized bio, Taraborrelli plans to speak with select individuals in the songstress' life. In addition to Mrs. Carter's life story, the best-selling author's credits include biographies about the Hilton family, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe and Diana Ross.

In the meantime, Beyoncé continues to conquer the music biz and take on the fashion world.

Engineer fell asleep before deadly train derailment: feds

A sleep-deprived engineer nodded off at the controls of a commuter train just before taking a 30 mph curve at 82 mph, causing a derailment last year that killed four people and injured more than 70, federal regulators said Tuesday.

William Rockefeller's sleepiness was due to a combination of an undiagnosed disorder — sleep apnea — and a drastic shift in his work schedule, the National Transportation Board said. It said the railroad lacked a policy to screen engineers for sleep disorders, which also contributed to the Dec. 1 crash. It also said a system that would have automatically applied the brakes would have prevented the crash.

The board also issued rulings on four other Metro-North accidents that occurred in New York and Connecticut in 2013 and 2014, repeatedly finding fault with the railroad.

"This would be almost a comedy of errors if it weren't so tragic," Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Tuesday. "It's clear these mistakes were avoidable."

The NTSB had reported Rockefeller's sleep apnea in April, saying tests revealed it interrupted his sleep dozens of times each night. Investigators said Rockefeller told them he had felt strangely "dazed" right before the crash. But until Tuesday it had refrained from declaring his sleepiness the cause of the crash.

It said that less than two weeks before the crash, Rockefeller had switched from a work day that began in late afternoon to one that began early in the morning. The board said that probably compounded his sleep problem.

It also noted that the technology known as positive train control was not in use at the time of the crash. Positive train control can automatically bring a train to a stop if it's exceeding a speed limit. Metro-North has said it is working to install the technology.

On the other accidents, the NTSB found:

—A May 17, 2013, derailment and collision in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was caused by broken joint bars, which are used to join rails of different sizes. At least 65 people were injured. The board said Metro-North had deferred scheduled track maintenance and lacked "a comprehensive track maintenance program."

—A track foreman who was fatally struck by a train in West Haven, Connecticut, on May 28, 2013, was probably due to a mistake by a student rail traffic controller. The controller misunderstood some instructions and canceled the signals protecting the section of track the man was on, the NTSB said.

—In a similar accident in Manhattan on March 10, 2014, a worker was killed by a train while trying to re-energize tracks that had been out of service for maintenance. The NTSB blamed the accident of briefings that poorly communicated which part of the track would be safe.

—The derailment of a freight train on Metro-North tracks in the Bronx on July 18, 2013, which caused no injuries, was caused by deteriorated concrete ties and other problems compounded by deferred maintenance, the NTSB said.

In March, the Federal Railroad Administration issued a stinging report on Metro-North, saying the railroad let safety concerns slip while pushing to keep trains on time. Railroad executives pledged to make safety their top priority.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said Monday that the new NTSB report documents "the cascading catastrophes over a single year illustrating the urgent need for dramatic upgrades and improvements in safety and reliability."

Metro-North is the second-largest commuter rail line in the country. It carried more than 83.4 million riders between New York City and its suburbs last year.

5 career secrets from Amy Poehler’s new memoir

Written By Unknown on Senin, 27 Oktober 2014 | 23.16

Amy Poehler has created and starred in successful TV shows and movies, she's hosted the Golden Globes (twice!) and she has a shelf full of awards to show for her efforts.

So how did she go from struggling waitress to alpha comedian? Poehler shares some surprising career advice in her memoir, "Yes Please," which comes out on Tuesday.

Take a look:

1. 'Treat your career like a bad boyfriend'

Poehler isn't into the whole "positive affirmation" thing. Instead of visualizing yourself sitting in the corner office, Poehler suggests simply not worrying about it.

"Here's the thing. Your career won't take care of you. It won't call you back or introduce you to its parents. Your career will openly flirt with other people while you're around," she writes. "It's never going to leave its wife for you. Your career is f - - king other people and everyone knows but you."

Ouch.

2. Your career and your passion don't always match up

Poehler clarifies her first point by explaining that career and creativity are two different things.

"Creativity is connected to your passion, that light that drives you," she writes. "Career is different. Career is the stringing together of opportunities and jobs . . . career is the thing that will not fill you up and never make you truly whole."

In short, focus on your passion — and then maybe, if you're lucky, career success will follow.

3. 'Ambivalence is key to success'

It's OK to be concerned with your work, but not your year-end review.

"You have to care about how good you are and how good you feel but not about how good people think you are or how good people think you look," Poehler writes.

4. 'Success is filled with MSG'

No matter how many Emmys you add to your mantle, it won't be enough, says Poehler.

"It doesn't matter how much you get; you are left wanting more," she writes. "Success is filled with MSG."

5. Never drop your script on Poehler's lap if you see her sleeping on a train

Poehler tells the story of a man brazen enough to do just that — and it made her very, very angry.

"Being a working actor whom people recognize sometimes means you occasionally get the young up-and-comer who thinks that meeting you is their chance to break in," she writes. "The reality is most people become 'famous' or get 'great jobs' after a very, very long tenure shoveling s - - t, and not because they handed their script to someone on the street."

Curse of the Cardinals: Oscar Taveras third player to die in 12 years

On Sunday evening, the baseball community was rocked with news of the death of 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras in a car crash in the Dominican Republic. The accident also claimed the life of his girlfriend.

Taveras' death is the latest tragic incident to befall the Cardinals, who have seen three active players lose their lives in the last 12 years.

In 2002, 33-year-old starter Darryl Kile was found dead of "coronary disease" in his Chicago hotel room, just days after the passing of legendary team broadcaster Jack Buck.

In 2007, 29-year-old reliever Josh Hancock perished in a car crash after his Ford Explorer slammed into a tow truck on Interstate 64 in St. Louis. Hancock was intoxicated at the time of the accident.

As the news of his Taveras' death spread, Twitter turned into an outpouring of sympathy from teammates and players around the sport.

In addition to expressing sympathy at Taveras' passing, former Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez implored authorities in his native Dominican Republic country to fix the highways.

Taveras, touted as the No. 3 prospect in the game by Baseball America before the 2013 and 2014 seasons, appeared in 80 games for the Cardinals this season, hitting .239 with three homers and 22 RBIs while playing center and right field. His first major-league hit was a home run on May 31.

The 22-year-old had seven at-bats this postseason, none bigger than his game-tying, pinch-hit homer in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Giants — the only game in the series that the Cardinals would win.

NYPD launches probe after cops fix car of chokehold victim’s mom

The NYPD has launched an Internal Affairs investigation into why cops fixed a broken headlight for the mother of chokehold victim Eric Garner and helped her beat a ticket for the moving violation — as exclusively reported by The Post.

A police source on Monday confirmed the probe, just hours after a front-page expose of the favorable treatment given Gwen Carr, 65, following a routine traffic stop of her 2006 Kia Sedona minivan on Oct. 21.

Sources have said that Carr — who has a pending $75 million suit against the city — blew her stack and phoned the NYPD's Staten Island borough commander, Assistant Chief Edward Delatorre, who gave her his phone number in the wake of her son's controversial death.

Delatorre then launched a chain of calls that ended with a lieutenant and a seargent personally buying a replacement headlight and taking it to Carr's home, where they installed it on her minivan.

They also gave her the paperwork necessary to void her summons — which carries a $150 fine — because the repair was made within 24 hours.

"The cops were ordered to do this," a source told The Post.

"They paid for it themselves. They did the work themselves and took care of the ticket."

Austrian teen who joined ISIS: ‘Here I can really be free’

One of the teens who fled Austria to become poster girl for jihad in Syria has blasted claims that she wants to return home in an interview believed to be held at gunpoint by her ISIS-devoted husband.

"Here I can really be free," 15-year-old Sabina Selimovic told French magazine, Paris Match via SMS text messages. "I can practice my religion."

"I couldn't do that in Vienna," she added.

Under the watchful eye of her jihadist hubby, Selimovic spoke to the weekly publication using text messages and claimed she was not pregnant as previously reported. She also admitted that she was in fact loving her new-found life in the war-torn region, Central European News reports.

"I like to eat," she continued. "The food here is very similar to Austria even if it's mainly halal food. You can get ketchup here, Nutella and cornflakes."

But experts back in Vienna are crying foul — claiming that the entire interview is just one big publicity stunt used to try and rebuild the image of the Islamic State amid recent reports that Selimovic and her friend Samra Kesinovic, 17, wished to return to their families in Austria.

Sabina SelimovicPhoto: CEN/Europics

"If they really want it to be believable that the girls are now claiming they don't want to come home, they should let them give the interview on neutral territory where it's possible to see that they aren't being threatened by a gun," an Austrian security insider told CEN. "If the claim they want to come home is untrue, they have the opportunity to walk back into Syria."

Authorities have analyzed the transcript of the interview and are almost completely certain that Selimovic would have been ordered and threatened to retract anything she had previously said in order to keep the flow of ISIS recruits steady, according to CEN.

She says that when her and Kesinovic first made their way into the Syrian epicenter for ISIS — the city of Rakka — they traveled with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. In April, the terror teens left a chilling note for their parents which read: "Don't look for us. We will serve Allah, and we will die for him."

Upon their arrival, the two girls were immediately married to a pair of jihadist fighters whom they lived with for two months under the same roof. The girls eventually moved out with each of their husbands into separate homes, with Selimovic and her "soldier" living in a 3 bedroom apartment.

Since word has spread about Selimovic and Kesinovic's devotion to ISIS, Austrian police have compiled a dossier about the girls' links with the terrorist group and believe they could slap the two with charges if they do ever decide to return, CEN reports.

"Participation in a terrorist organization is a punishable offense in Austria which doesn't just mean standing on the front line and pulling the trigger, it also includes supporting or supplying information to the Islamic State in Syria or Iraq," said Austrian criminal lawyer, Andreas Venier. "If the girls are found to have been involved with the terror group, they could face a prison sentence of up to five years even as minors."

Man shoots 400-pound bear that twice tried to get at dog food

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 26 Oktober 2014 | 23.16

A Florida man shot and killed a 400-pound black bear after it broke into his house two nights in a row to get to a bag of dog food, a state wildlife officer said on Friday.

"I felt in danger enough that since it wouldn't leave I had to shoot it," said Victor Peters of Lady Lake of the Wednesday night incident in a video interview posted online by the Orlando Sentinel.

Killing a bear in Florida is illegal. Wildlife officer Greg Workman of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation said he expects to hand the case to prosecutors by early next week for their consideration at the completion of his investigation.

"It sounds like he did what he could do to try to keep the bear from coming back," Workman said. "We're looking at all sides to make the best decision."

Bears and humans cross paths, occasionally fatally for the animals, in Central Florida where sprawling subdivisions have sprung up in former bear habitat and along their natural corridors around the Ocala National Forest.

In a previous case this year, seven bears were euthanized in April by wildlife officers in the search for the culprit after one grabbed a Lake Mary woman by the head outside her home.

Peters, whose home is about 50 miles northwest of Orlando, called 911 on Tuesday evening after the bear entered his glassed-in porch by smashing out the metal-framed windows to get the dog food, Workman said.

At the direction of wildlife officers, Peters removed the dog food from his porch, but the bear returned on Wednesday evening.

Peters, in the video interview on Friday, said he was prepared with a loaded rifle. When the bear ignored his yells and kept approaching, Peters said he shot the bear in the head from a distance of 10 feet.

Workman said the adult male bear was one of the biggest he has seen in the area.

One pedestrian dead, another injured in separate accidents

One pedestrian was killed and another is fighting for his life after two separate accidents less than an hour apart in Brooklyn on Sunday morning, authorities said.

A woman in her 60s was crossing the street at Ralph Avenue and East 65th Street around 7 a.m., when a car hit and killed her, police said. The driver remained at the scene and there were no signs of criminality, cops added.

At 6:20 a.m., a man in his 60s was also crossing the street at 18th Avenue and 65th Street and was struck by a motorist, police said. He was rushed to Lutheran Hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Is Russell Brand the next mayor of London?

Russell Brand is thought to be considering a run for mayor of London, despite repeatedly saying that voting is a waste of time.

Brand, a vocal critic of mainstream politics, reportedly told friends he wants to unseat current mayor Boris Johnson at the next mayoral elections in 2016.

According to the Independent, Brand's spokeswoman refused to deny the rumours, telling the paper: "We are not commenting."

Brand, who was previously married to Katy Perry, has become increasingly outspoken in recent years about his disgust with current politics.

He has called for the abolition of Britain's monarchy, demanded more compassionate treatment of drug addicts and told interviewers that he never votes because he regards the current political system as skewed to benefit the rich.

While his views have seen him branded extremist in some of the media he has a large following among the young with 8.4 million Twitter followers.

Last week he stoked controversy by telling a BBC interviewer that he was "open-minded" about conspiracy theories blaming the 9/11 attacks on the US government.

He told BBC anchorman Evan Davis that he refused to rule out the possibility that the terror attacks were orchestrated by the American government and highlighted the "interesting" relationship between the families of former US president George Bush and al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The brutal torture ISIS hostages suffered before their execution

James Foley and other hostages murdered by ISIS were starved, brutally beaten and subjected to unbearable psychological torture before their grisly deaths.

Foley, 40 was singled out for the worst abuse by his bloodthirsty jihadist captors because of his American citizenship and US policy against hostage negotiations, witnesses told the New York Times.

"He told me how they had chained his feet to a bar and then hung the bar so that he was upside down from the ceiling," said Jejoen Bontinck, a 19-year-old former jihadist from Belgium who spent three weeks in the same cell as Foley in summer, 2013. "Then they left him there."

Cellmates said Foley was often waterboarded.

"It was when there was no blood," a former cellmate said, "than we knew he had suffered something even worse."

Their captors also played cruel mind games–making sure the Americans saw some European hostages set free, dangling the prospect of freedom that would never arrive for them.

"I am obviously pretty scared to die," wrote American hostage Peter Kassig, targeted to be the next prisoner to be executed. "The hardest part is not knowing — hoping, and wondering if I should even hope at all."

Captors offered hostages chocolates and asked intimate, personal questions that only the hostages would know the answers — showing the jihadists had been in contact loved ones back home.

Hostages often proclaimed their conversion to Islam, in hopes of receiving better treatment from captors. But Foley's leap of faith was probably a "sincere" embrace of the faith, according Bontinck.

"I recited the Quran with him," said Bontinck, who signed up to be an Islamic fighter only to be accused of being a spy.

"Most people would say, 'Let's convert so that we can get better treatment.' But in his case, I think it was sincere."

The brutality of living in secret ISIS prisons occasionally prompted hostages to turn on each other for the few rations and blankets available to them.

But that wasn't the case for Foley, who consistently tried to help fellow prisoners, former cellmates said.

This past Christmas, Foley even organized a "Secret Santa" program for cellmates with each fashioning a gift — from prison trash — for a randomly drawn fellow prisoner.

Secret Santa was a tradition in Foley's upbringing. The photographer's Secret Santa gave him a circle of wax, made from discarded candle, to cushion for forehead when he bowed in prayer.

British photographer John Cantlie was captured at the same time as James Foley. Cantlie remains in captivity and has been featured in a series of pro-ISIS video released by the terror group.

Hostages always knew their lives could be snuffed out in an instant.

When Russian hostage Sergey Gorbunov was dragged out of his cell and shot to death this past spring, the grisly video of that execution was shown to prisoners.

"This [captors would say] is what will happen to you if your government doesn't pay," according to former hostages.

Foley, a photographer, and fellow shutterbug John Cantlie had just filed pictures at a Syrian Internet cafe on Nov. 22, 2012, and were headed for Turkey when their taxi cab was ambushed. Gunmen handcuffed Foley and Cantlie and threw them in a van.

After two years of confinement, Foley was beheaded on Aug. 19 with the appalling footage splashed on the web. Cantlie, a British citizen, remains in captivity.

The masked fighters left behind Mustafa Ali, the photographers' Syrian translator.

"If you follow us, we'll kill you," they told Ali.
